Course Update
  • The recent hot and very gusty westerly winds have created a considerable debris issue across the course. The staff are doing their best to ensure that the fairways are cleared, but it will be a few days before the rough can also be cleared.
  • The theme over the coming weeks is mowing, mowing and more mowing. There are additional jobs being carried out as time permits. I will shortly be arranging for a delivery of bunker sand to re-fill all the bunkers. When that happens I'll announce a request for workers to help spread the sand in each bunker. Stay tuned.
  • A reminder, please fill/repair divots and pitch marks.
  • Please note that the clubhouse will be closed Christmas day and Boxing day. The course will be closed on Christmas day only.
  • A warm welcome to the newly elected members of the BGC Women's committee. The new President is Pam Barker with Helen Chadwick returning as Vice President. The new Captain is Anne Geddes with Ellen Goodwin as her Vice Captain. Barbara Clayton is now the Secretary and members on committee are Noela McMurray and Christine Levy. Congratulations to everyone and I hope you enjoy a successful and productive year of golf.

Saturday 28th November. St Andrew's Day. Thank you to our Scotsmen hosts of this event for providing the major prizes. Ian McKenzie, Bob Young, Alan Lindsay, Ken Dobie and Alan Turpie. This was a tough day on the course with temperatures up in the mid 30's with strong westerlies. Given the conditions, the requirement for a member of the winning team to be in the clubhouse to claim the prize on behalf of their team was relaxed. The winning team was the Farrell Four, comprised of Henry Farrell (21), Tim Farrell (11), Ben Farrell (25) and Vernon Farrell (aka Vella) (24) with a combined score of 144 points. Second prize went to the Dawn Patrol team of Glen Welsh (9), Glen Lehane (20), Simon Taufel (12) and Matt Helm (16) with a score of 141 points. Third prize went to the team of John Russell (22), Eugene O'Sullivan (20), Pat Donoghue (18) and Clark Gibbons (11) with their score of 137 points. The single event was won by Warren Ryan (21) with a score of 41 points. Balls were won down to 133 points via a count back. We welcomed a visiting player from Headland GC QLD to the club.

Sunday 29th November. Due to some computer issues the results of this event were re-processed. 10 players in the field on a very windy hot day. Nick Reinhard (10) posted 36 points to beat Sonya Bleakley (35) on a count back. A member from Merewether GC joined the event.

Monday 30th November. Last event for November. "Monday Madness". 7 players in the 9 hole competition. Jim Rowe (12) scored 21 points to win from Sharon Rowe (34) with 19 points. Balls won down to 17 points on count back.

The J W Draper final was completed last Sunday in very trying conditions. The handicap stroke Foursomes Match Play knockout event has been in play for a number of months due to cancellations and adjustments to the calendar and I thank the players for their patience throughout the competition. The defending champions from 2019 showed they had the right stuff to again claim the trophy for 2020. Tony Fitzpatrick and Jim Phillips accounted for Dennis Neale and Norm Dodds 2 and 1.

A reminder that we will be reviewing our Covid policies during December in time for implementation in the New Year.

  • Saturday 28th November is the annual St Andrew's Day 4 Ball competition. This event has been in the calendar for two decades and the sponsors of the event would really appreciate some enthusiasm from the players. Please see the following notice.

The Annual St Andrew’s Day competition will be held on 28th November as a 4 ball aggregate stableford. The donated prizes will be awarded as a bottle of Scotch each for the winning team, and also a bottle for the best individual score. The competition is for members only, but a maximum of two guests may be invited, and at least one member of the winning team must come in to collect the prize on behalf of the team, so if you have a good score, please contact the club later in the afternoon, or leave contact details so you can be reached in order to come in. There will not be a formal presentation, but the prizes can be collected on the day.

The event has been held for 20 years or so, and is now part of a campaign initiated by Nicola Sturgeon (alias Wee Kranky) to dispel the rumor that the Scots have long pockets and/or small sporrans. We (Ian McKenzie, Alan Turpie, Alan Lindsay, Ken Dobie, and Bob Young) await a similar response from  the English for St George’s Day, the Irish for St Patrick’s Day, the Welsh for St David’s Day, the Kiwis for Waitangi Day, and, of course, the Australians for Australia Day.

There seems to have been a challenge issued
here, is there a group who would like to rise to the occasion in the coming year???

  • The final for the J W Draper Knock out will be held on Sunday 29th. The contest will be played between the teams of Jim Phillips and Tony Fitzpatrick and Norm Dodds and Dennis Neale. A referee is still to be allocated, anyone who wishes to officiate the contest should contact John Buchanan. The tee-off is mid morning.
  • Wednesday 2nd December is the Ambrose event you've been waiting for. There will be no minimum requirement for tee shots, so.......... How low can you go!!!
  • Saturday 5th December is the Monthly Medal and the first round of the Peter Tait trophy.
  • Saturday 12th is the second round of the Peter Tait trophy and the Ted Box Trophy (Medal of Medals). To qualify for the Ted Box trophy you must have won a monthly medal during this (2020) calendar year, and be eligible to win a trophy event.

A Little Humour
A recent study found that the average golfer walks about 1450 kilometres per year.
Another study found golfers drink, on average, 97 litres of alcohol per year, which means, on average, golfers get about 15 kilometres to the litre.

Kind of makes you proud. I almost feel like a hybrid!

Course Update
  • All the fairways and tee boxes have now been scarified and a fertiliser applied. Mowing is underway to 'stripe' the fairways to improve the visual impact. The staff will be attending to some heavy mowing requirements over the next 5 months, but will commence trimming the hedges over the next two weeks then make a start on the next path installation. The path from the 7th green to the 8th tee and fairway will be a large job, but will greatly assist the access to this area of the course.
  • The next time you log into your club account to book a game, take a look at the 'Member Register' tab. Secured by the member login password are some extensive member details. Players can now access contact phone and email details as well as membership category. So the next time you wish to book into a team event for a trophy, you can now determine if your playing partner is eligible to win the event with you.

  • This coming Wednesday is another of our 4BBB events which, due to popular response, is not accompanied by a single Stableford in conjunction.
  • Saturday 21st is the Legacy Day event. This is the major charity day for BGC and a strong turnout is requested. • Sunday 22nd is the final of the Club Championships for the men. The Open event is played over 36 holes and will feature defending champion from 2019, John Mulholland playing Chris Boggs. Course Update
  • After considerable rainfall and the subsequent course closure last week, the greens' staff are taking the opportunity to scarify the fairways. This task has not been carried out for some time, and in a few weeks players should notice a marked improvement in the quality of the fairways. In line with this process the preferred lies situation will remain in force until the excess grass clippings have been removed. I've included a couple of photos below to illustrate how our team is improving the playing surfaces with a comparison of how another, less well known course, is doing a similar thing.
  • Bunkers will be back in play from tomorrow (Tuesday). A reminder that the Covid rules are still in force. For a full coverage of the Covid rules, see my previous blog.

  • Due to the Covid restrictions, the sunburn cream dispensers are not in use. Sunburn cream with the club logo affixed is available from the pro shop for $11.95.
