Spring is "around the corner"...

30/8/2021

COVID Update

The current COVID rules will remain in place as the regional health rules have been extended.  As always we will keep you posted of any changes.  Thank you all for your adherence to the current COVID protocols.

From recent government announcements and health advice the quickest way back to having our Club House open and playing in groups of 3 and 4 is for high levels of vaccinations, so please consider getting the vaccinations if you have not done so already.

Anniversary Dinner and Trophy Vouchers

Following a recent submission to the board relating to the Anniversary Dinner and vouchers/prizes, the Board has decided upon the following.
Anniversary Dinner
The Anniversary Dinner will move from being an annual dinner to a dinner event which will celebrate significant milestone occasions for the Club. The next Anniversary Dinner is scheduled to celebrate the Club's 125th year in 2026.
Presentation Dinner
The trophy and championship winners will be recognised with a Presentation Dinner to be held soon after the completion of the Club Championships in November.  This year's presentation dinner is scheduled for the  Saturday the 13th of November 2021.
Trophy Vouchers
This year all trophy winners will receive a voucher to the presentation dinner as will the Championship winners; the same practice as in recent years.
Then, from next year, 2022, all trophy winners with the exception of Club Championships will have their accounts credited to the value of the voucher on the day of the event, Championship winners will be awarded vouchers to the Presentation dinner.

Click to read Prizes for Medley and Men’s Competitions January 2021

All Trophy winners, members and members guests are invited to the Presentation Dinner.

A review of the voucher system will be undertaken at the end of 2022.

Monday Competition

We are keen to understand what our membership prefers for the Monday competition, is it:
  1. A nine hole Yellow Course competition - or,
  2. A White Course 18 hole competition?
Let me know, send an email click here bgcclubcaptain@gmail.com .

Score Card Scanning...

Picture
A reminder to click CONFIRM when you have scanned your score card after your round.

It's a simple three step process - click on the photo.  Also there is an instruction sheet posted above the scanner in the Club House.

Course Update...

As always at this time of year our greens staff and Dad's Army are working on course maintenance and improvements before the growing season starts and it's cutting grass time.  A few updates for this week:

8th & 9th Fairway Drainage
We had been keen to get a rain system come through to test out the work carried out in May, we had around 90mm of rain last week and I'm glad to report the new work handled it very well.  On Saturday the flow through the 9th pipe and 8th fairway drain was still a considerable amount. Click the photo to enlarge...

Sand for Divots - essential course repair
The sharp eyed amongst you would have noticed new sand boxes on those tees without them. The 1st, 12th, 16th and the 18th tees. Here's what they look like, on the left.
Practice Area
The chipping on the old tennis/croquet courts and practice range is getting more popular which is great.  To facilitate keeping this area in good "nick" we have repurposed the sand box from the 18th to this area.  For your convenience.

You may have noticed the 3rd tee had a "boy prune".  The hedge has been removed to keep this tee looking like the sixteenth tee.  The removal reduces maintenance and player frustration when  "not the best shot" gets lost in the hedge.  The 3rd tee sign was recently relocated to a safer position for those on the 2nd hole.
Next week...

Monday and Tuesday will be the greens, tee box and fairway renovations.  With that comes the "greenskeepers revenge" formats.  A bit of fun as we move into Spring.  Enjoy.

Recent Results...

Wednesday & Thursday - Course Closed - it rained unfortunately.
Picture
Friday - Nugget Nine
A soggy course but a good field of 32 competed for the "gold".
The winner was Gily Levy with 23 point and runner up Robert Eriksson on 22 point.
Saturday - Single Stableford

Another strong field of 88 entrants, great to see.
The winner with 40 points was Alan Turpie and running up was David Bickford with 39. David won the A grade, while Patrick Lane took B Grade and Kevin Burke with a great 38 points won C Grade.

Sunday - Medley Stableford
Thomas Madigan with 42 points won the day with Daniel Weekes runner up on 38.  Well done.

Monday Medely Stableford

Brenton Aggar to honours with 34 points on a count back from our visitor from Moss Vale Owen Babula.

Upcoming Events...

This Saturday is the September Monthly Medal and the Max Allen Memorial Trophy.  Max was Club President from 1969 to 1973.

Next Wednesday following the course renovations is the Greenskeepers Revenge - a 2 ball Ambrose format. A bit of fun to ensure the sun keeps shining!!
Best Regards,

Dave Burgess

August 23rd Update...

23/8/2021

It's been very fortunate that we can use our golf course for exercise during the last couple of weeks. The Wednesday and Saturday fields have been well over 100 players.  While we can't travel far to meet up with family and friends we can still enjoy a round of golf.

COVID protocols were outlined in last week's post, please refer to them as required.  Current requirements are for mandatory wearing of masks while not exercising.  One person per golf cart is the current requirement.

Course Update...

Preferred Lies - we still have a few holes which will "mud the ball" so the preferred lies rule is on close watch. It may well be in place for a while longer if the tonight and tomorrows rain event comes as plan.
Picture
 14th Green GUR
Timing is everything, the top dressing of the turf went on this morning before the rain set in.  This work is really knitting together well and with a bit of luck will be perfect in a couple of months. Click on the photo to get the detail.
Finally, the 13th pond has been drained and inspection of the wall adjacent to the concrete bridge on the fairway side shows a significant hole which causes the water to leak through.  Now we know the problem we can work on the solution.

Recent Results...

Wednesday - 4BBB with Singles in Conjunction
As mentioned previously a great roll up with 94 players. Peter Dunn and Ray Clayton took "line honours" with 47 points from runners up Chris Kunz and Vern Vella with 46 on a count back. Roberto Ratalino took the singles prize with 43 points.
Picture
Friday's Golden Nugget
A great result for winner Fran Dubiez with 27 point a clear winner from the rest of the field. Robert Dean running up with 23 points. A good field with 31 entrants.
Saturday - W H Friend Par Trophy
While a par event is not everyones favourite we had a field of 94 (again) to give it ago. Par events appear to polarise golfers - they either hate it (the majority) or love the challenge. We only have a couple a year so it keeps us on our toes.
This years winner is a well deserved junior member is Thomas Moulton with a +5 result.  Runner up with +4 Bryan Frith.

Sunday - Medley Stableford
Again some good scoring across the field, Daniel Weekes won with 40 points with Warwick Keirnan runner up with 37.  Well done Warwick.

Monday Madness
With 37 point John Buchanan won the day from Brenton Aggar  with 36 points.
With the current COVID rules it is a bit difficult to outline the upcoming events so it's best to wait and see what happens later this week.

We will keep you posted accordingly.

Enjoy the last few days of Winter...

COVID Protocols back in place...

16/8/2021

LATEST UPDATE: Golf NSW advice is that only one person per golf cart.

As I am sure you are aware, last Saturday at 5:00pm regional NSW was included in the restrictions for the control of COVID-19.  Kevin has been communicating by email the details of the restrictions, the changes to the golf competitions and the local rules regarding play under the COVID plan.

The local rules are as they were last year and they are as follows;
These local rules are issued with the approval of Golf NSW under the guidelines provided by the R & A and the USGA.

Local Rule CV 1 – Scoring

  • Players are to enter their own hole scores on the scorecard (it is not necessary for a marker to do it).
  • It is not necessary to have a marker physically certify the player's scores, but some form of verbal certification should take place within the group.
Local Rule CV 2 – Flagsticks

  • Players are required to leave the Flagsticks in the hole at all times.
Local Rule CV 3 – Holing Out

  • A ball at rest in the hole will be considered to be holed even if it is not entirely below the level of the hole.
Local Rule CV 4 – Bunkers

  • Preferred Lies may be taken when the ball lies in a bunker through the general area.

The ball washers are out of service, the rakes are out of the bunkers and the access to water on the course is not in service.

Please ensure you carry enough water and fluids for your round of golf.

The MiClub bookings page has been updated to reflect the two player rules.  This is for the foreseeable future.  Please refer to your booking emails or the booking page to ensure you have a tee time or know if your tee time has altered slightly.

Presentations will not be held, so go to the MiClub page and look at the Leaderboard or the competition and click on Results to find the details.

Our greens staff are still working and keeping our course in great condition so we can continue to enjoy the game of golf.

Picture
The note from Nathan Smith MP provides some clarification as to travel within our LGA.

I hope this is of assistance.

RECIPROCAL CLUBS

For our members who are not able to travel to play at BGC, we do have reciprocal playing rights in NSW with:
  • Eastlakes Golf Club
  • Wollongong Golf Club
So, subject to your location and the travel restrictions, you maybe able to continue to play at these clubs.

Dad's Army....

Picture
We owe a great big "Thank you" to our merry band of workers - Dad's Army.  The clearing of the undergrowth adjacent to the path at the 8th green has transformed this part of the course.
I would also like to thank John McGuire for his work as well on this project.
If you have a couple of hours free on a Thursday morning and enjoy great camaraderie then contact me or Anton Sanger for more information.

Recent Results...

Wednesday  - Single Stableford
A good field of 81 players.  With 41 points Tony Rourke won the day and Grant Blanchard with 39 points running up on a count back.
NTP on the 11th went to Jacob Nicholls and the Pro-Pin was won by Harry Caust.
Picture
Friday - Golden Nugget
Congratulations to Mary O'Connor for winning "gold" with 21 points.  Running up from Highlands Golf Club was Warwick Knight with 19 on a count back.
A good role up of 23 players.
Saturday - 3 ball Aggregate Stableford
A field of 85 competed in teams on a great day for golf. The team of Thomas Madigan, Timothy Farrell and Angus Yuill took the winnings with a combined 111 points.  A great score in this format.  Runners' up were Nick Reinhard, Harry Caust and Craig Houden with 107 points.
The Pro-Pin was won by Brian Lamb and the NTP on the 11th went to John Mellen.
Harry Caust was the Single Stableford winner with a very tidy 43 points.

Sunday - Single Stableford
Emma Fernandez won the day with 41 points on a count back from Daniel Weekes.

Monday Madness - Single Stableford
Jacob Nicholls won with 32 points from Daniel Weekes with 31 points.

Upcoming Golf Events...

This Saturday is a par event for the WH Friend Trophy.  WH Friend was a committee member for 23 years from 1915 and President in 1945 and 1946.  Is that a record for BGC?
This event was first played in 1951, however the trophy went missing between 1973 and 2002.  It's in the cabinet and will be up for grabs on Saturday.

The JW Draper knock out will be postponed while we understand how long the restrictions on the number of players will be in place.

Enjoy the longer days and warmer sunshine.

9/8/2021

J MacMaster Memorial Trophy and Other Results

Saturday - J. MacMaster Memorial Trophy and Medal Round - August
Congratulations to Robert Eriksson for a magnificent round of Nett 60 to win the J MacMaster Memorial Trophy.  It is not too often that we can record a score like that, so close to being in the 50's.

Picture

Upcoming Golf Events

The major golf events for the rest of August are the WH Friend Trophy a par competition on the 21st August.
The J W Draper knock out rounds continue to the end of the month.
Monday the 30th is the Cobra Golf Fitting Day - COVID restrictions may see this one change.

Course Update...

Picture
A swarm of volunteers descended on the 14th tee surround to lay turf on the reconstructed right hand side where the bunker used to be.  A big thank you to to all helping hands.  A great improvement to this hole.
13th Pond
You will probably notice the 13th pond has been drained.  This will allow us to inspect the concrete bridge and determine a course of action to improve the drainage in this area. The added benefit of this is the surface water is no longer flowing from the bridge down across the 16th fairway and it's drying out.  Click on the photo.

Enjoy the longer daylight hours and get out and play more golf....
