Course Update
  • The course is really starting to show its quality, and is a tribute to the hard work done by Matt Morris (Head Greenskeeper) and his team of Adam, Colin and Tom. A gentle reminder to repair your divots and pitchmarks to help the course in its presentation.
  • The Preferred Lies condition has now been removed, so players are to 'Play it as it lies'. Bunkers are still under the Covid conditions, i.e. no rakes provided, and preferred lies available.
  • Following on from my note last week, a new 4 tonne hydraulic tipper trailer has been procured and will arrive towards the end of this week. I'm sure it will be very well used in the future. Photos of the new trailer are below.

  • Our Club Championship season is upon us. Next Saturday begins a very busy few weeks. For full coverage of the individual events, please read my previous blog.
  • The signup sheet for the Summer Eclectic competition is available in the pro shop. The Winter edition ends after the final rounds on Wednesday. The scores are very close and a couple of birdies on Wednesday could change the standings. A Conditions of Competition has been created for the event and is posted on the notice board in the clubhouse and in the pro shop. It will be uploaded to the club website very shortly.
  • A reminder that the 1/4 finals of the J Draper knockout need to be completed on the 18th October (tee times are set up) unless completed earlier.
  • The 1/4 finals for the various levels of Club Championships are due for completion by Sunday 25th October.
  • The Vicars Shield commences with the first round on Saturday 24th October and completes the following Saturday.
  • Feedback is requested for the Monday Madness competition . Previously the event was an 18 hole competition, but several months ago this was changed to a 9 hole event. Numbers for either format have not changed over this time. If you are a Monday player, or consider that you may like to include Monday in your competition schedule, would you like to provide me with feedback on your preferred format to bgcclubcaptain@gmail.com

  • A completely new competition has been scheduled for play on Wednesday 28th October. It is a 'Crazy Tee' competition for the 'Cock of the Walk' trophy. The event is available to club members who have playing privileges which include play on Wednesdays. Tee locations will be set which lengthen the course and increase the Par to 72. A card for the day will be printed and provided for players. The competition format is a 4BBB with no individual stableford included. More details will be provided closer to the date, but it will be a very different course to play, so book up in 4s and stay tuned. A photo of the trophy has been attached.

Wednesday 23rd September. A very enjoyable day for a single Stableford competition. 74 players in the field with Eugene O'Sullivan (23) posting 43 points to claim the prize. Best in 'A' grade was Peter Leon (15) with 39 points, 'B' was Don Barker (20) with 38 points and in 'C' grade Bill Davison (28) posted 39 points to win via a count back. Friday 25th September. The "Nugget". 17 players in a small field with only one lady this week. David Bleakley (16) scored 24 points to claim the win from Gil Levy (15) with 21 points via count back from Russell Bourne (10) and in fourth was John Mellen (8) with 20. Balls were won down to 17 points.

Saturday 26th September. The Redmond Dalton Trophy day. This event is one of the best supported days on our calendar. It is such a shame that the Covid conditions prevented more celebration after the round. The weather was certainly cause to spend time in front of the fireplaces. A huge 'Thank you' to the Dalton group for the support they show to the club each year.
With gale force strength winds and windchill temperatures below -7C any score was a good one. However, Peter Dunn (27) managed to post 37 points to beat David Anderson (23) on a count back to win both the Redmond Dalton Trophy for 2020 and the daily event prize. 88 players entered the field and balls were won down to 30 points via a count back.

Sunday 27th September. Only 8 members in the field on a bitterly cold weekend. One of our junior players, Louis Connell (22) posted a fine 43 points to win his first event from Brian Hanrahan (14) with 37 points. Balls won down to 36 points.

Monday 28th September. "Monday Madness" 7 players in the competition, but a very large contingent of visitors on the course. Ray Clayton (22) posted 23 points to win the 9-hole event from Heather Webster (13) with 19 points. Balls won down to 17 points.

Course Update
  • The course is very rapidly improving in appearance and the leaves are popping out everywhere! Rain over the weekend has helped wash in the sand and the greens will be in great condition by the weekend. Players will have noticed the new 3rd tee (Blue course) is almost complete and the watering systems have been laid for the extended 7th tee and the new 15th tee. In addition, drains have been dug to assist with the wet area to the front of the 4th tee (Red course). The extension of the fairway on the 3rd will be completed when the sprinkler part arrives.

  • It's amazing how much work has been achieved with this poor old tipper/trailer. The deck has been replaced at least once, the rear section required removal after it collapsed and the sides no longer function. The subframe is badly twisted. However, it has survived to get the paths to the stage they are at present, but alas it is time for the trailer to be retired. The club is currently sourcing a replacement, so if anyone has a hydraulic tipper/trailer in their shed which can carry up to 3 tonnes, we are interested.

Coming Events
A very busy competition season is upon us. I have provided below a short summary of each of the major trophies which will feature over the next 5 weeks. The full details are available in the Conditions of Competition for each event and is listed on the club website under the 'Golf' tab in the 'Captain's Blog' section. They are also on the club noticeboard and in the pro shop.
  • The Club Championship. This event commences on Saturday 3rd October with 2 rounds of stroke play. The 'Open' championship (currently held by John Mulholland) is open to all eligible players. The 'B' grade championship (currently held by Tony Rourke) is available to eligible players in the daily handicap range 13 - 19. The 'C' grade championship (currently held by Ken Dobie) is available to players with a daily handicap in excess of 19. Players wishing to have their scores considered for the 'Open' championship and who hold a daily handicap greater than 12 should advise the pro shop before the close of play on the 2nd round. Likewise, players should advise the pro shop if they do not wish to be considered for any of the championships on offer. Players may only contest the finals in one grade. The best placed players will then contest a match play knock out final series. The finals are over 36 holes for each of the 'Open' matches and 18 holes for 'B' and 'C' grade matches.
  • The Veterans' Plate. This competition (currently held by Chris Harvey) is played in conjunction with the Club Championships over two rounds. It is available to eligible players who are aged 65 or over and is awarded to the player with the best Net aggregate over the two rounds.
  • The Watson Cup. This is an entirely new competition and is considered as the Handicap Club Championship. The event is open to eligible players and is played over three consecutive weeks.  The first two rounds are played in conjunction with the Club Championships. The event will be won by the player with the best net score over 54 holes. Players must play in all three rounds.
  • The Lifestyle Championship Cup. This event is played in conjunction with the first two rounds of the Club Championships. The event is open to eligible Lifestyle category members and will be awarded to the player with the lowest aggregate scratch score over two rounds.
  • The Bradford Trophy. This event is essentially the Junior Club Championship. It is a mixed event and is held on the Sunday following the 2nd round of the Club Championships. The event is open to sub-junior, junior and student members who hold a valid AGU handicap. The trophy was last contested in 2005 and won by a young Sam Mulholland. The trophy is awarded to the player returning the best Stableford score over 18 holes.
  • Next Saturday 26th September is the very popular Redmond Dalton Trophy.
  • Wednesday 30th September is the final day for the Winter Eclectic competition. Keep your eye out for the signup sheet for the Summer edition of the competition in the pro shop.
  • Saturday 3rd October. The fun begins with a super busy day. The October Monthly medal and the first round of the Championship program.
  • Sunday October 4th. The first round of the J Draper knockout is completed.

The recent Titleist fitting day was very well supported with nearly all participants proceeding to a new purchase.

White Horse Cup 2021.
BGC has a strong tradition of representing the club in the White Horse Cup. This is a great opportunity to play other courses in the Illawarra region in February and March and hone your match play skills. We are looking for squad of 20 players in order to enter two teams. Registration sheets are on the notice boards. As the saying goes, you have to be in it to win it, who knows 2021 might just be that year.

Wednesday 16th September. The September Open day attracted 72 players into the field for the 4BBB competition. Scoring was very strong with the winning team of Martin Flaxman (24) and Peter Procopis (29) posting 52 points to beat Noel Davis (27) and Ric Denny (28) by 5 points. Balls were won down to 44 points via count back.
Picture

Friday 18th September. The "Nugget". Only a small field on this occasion with Gil Levy (26) posting 23 points to win from Vince O'Connor (26) on 20, Sharon Rowe (34) on 18 and Jim Rowe (12) with 17 points via a count back. Balls won down to 16 points.

Saturday 19th September. So we finally completed the August Monthly medal and the John McMaster Memorial trophy. A good field of 91 players enjoyed near perfect conditions for golf and the scores reflected those conditions. No less than 29 players played to, or beat, their handicap during the event with one player posting an amazing net 59!!
The 'A' grade medal was won by Langdon Emery (14) with a fine net 63 from John Buchanan (15) on net 65.
The 'B' grade medal was won by Tom Dunlop (20) on a count back from Les Brooker (18) with a score of net 65.
The 'C' grade medal was won by Graham Oldfield (27) with his amazing net 59 from Vince O'Connor (26) with a net 66.
The best scratch score on the day went to John Mulholland with his 75.
Players needed to play to their handicap to feature in a count back to win a ball.
Picture

The John McMaster Medal. This trophy has been won by Langdon Emery with his net 63 being the best eligible score posted. The Covid situation is preventing formal presentations but, as luck might have it Langdon was in the clubhouse when the results were posted so it was great to see a player enjoy receiving his trophy on the day. Congratulations.

Sunday 20th September. 18 holes played over the White course on a Sunday, sounds like fun. Scott Olding (13) agrees as he scored 35 points to win the competition from John Buchanan (14) with 34 points. Balls won down to 33 points.

Monday 21st September. Monday Madness over 9 holes. Just a small field, but Scott Olding (13) claimed his second win in as many days with 20 points on a count back from Murray Fox (35). Balls won down to 18 points.

Course Update
  • With the greens, tees and fairways now renovated the course is really starting to look fantastic. The boys will be on the mowers constantly from now through to Autumn next year.
  • Players will have noticed the work on the front of the 16th tee box. This tee box is being terraced to allow for an extension to the 3rd hole (see photos) for the Blue course. The new tee will not be in play for a while yet, to allow for the grass to establish. The 3rd fairway will be extended back towards the waterway with a new sprinkler head to be installed shortly.
Picture
  • A new member to the club, Brad Thompson, has sponsored the 1st tee (see photo). Members are encouraged to contact Brad for their design and interior requirements.

  • Another reminder to keep filling those divots, and to repair any pitch marks. The club championships are just around the corner, let's all help make sure the course is in tip top condition.

A Little Humour
The following poem was provided to me by Paul Barnes.
Perhaps an interesting contemplation on golf.

The Lay for the Troubled Golfer
BY EDGAR ALBERT GUEST

His eye was wild and his face was taut with anger and hate and rage,
And the things he muttered were much too strong for the ink of the printed page.
I found him there when the dusk came down, in his golf clothes still was he,
And his clubs were strewn around his feet as he told his grief to me:

“I’d an easy five for a seventy-nine—in sight of the golden goal—
An easy five and I took an eight—an eight on the eighteenth hole!

“I’ve dreamed my dreams of the ‘seventy men,’ and I’ve worked year after year,
I have vowed I would stand with the chosen few ere the end of my golf career;
I’ve cherished the thought of a seventy score, and the days have come and gone
And I’ve never been close to the golden goal my heart was set upon.

But today I stood on the eighteenth tee and counted that score of mine,
And my pulses raced with the thrill of joy—I’d a five for seventy-nine!

“I can kick the ball from the eighteenth tee and get this hole in five,
But I took the wood and I tried to cross that ditch with a mighty drive—”
Let us end the quotes, it is best for all to imagine his language rich,
But he topped that ball, as we often do, and the pill stopped in the ditch.

His third was short and his fourth was bad and his fifth was off the line,
And he took an eight on the eighteenth hole with a five for a seventy-nine.

I gathered his clubs and I took his arm and alone in the locker room
I left him sitting upon the bench, a picture of grief and gloom;
And the last man came and took his shower and hurried upon his way,
But still he sat with his head bowed down like one with a mind astray,

And he counted his score card o’er and o’er and muttered this doleful whine:
“I took an eight on the eighteenth hole, with a five for a seventy-nine!”

Now, Go out and Enjoy a Game of Golf !!

May the 4th be with you (fairway that is!)

  • The 4th fairway is back in use and the GUR has been removed. Check out the photographs to see what it was like just 4 1/2 months ago. There are also a number of areas which were posted as GUR and have now been returned to normal play.

Sunday 6th September. The Final of the John Owens Knockout competition in 4BBB Handicap Match Play. The following was received from my roving reporter on the scene.
"The John Owens Finals was contested on Sunday with Tony Hobson and Peter Metcalf winners 3 and 2 over Alec Dietsch and John Jones. Tony and Peter were never headed in the high quality match, with 6 holes won with birdies, 9 holes won or squared in pars and only 1 hole squared in bogeys. The match was highlighted by quality shot making and excellent putting and Tony and Peter were worthy winners."
Congratulations to the winners and to all who took part, and thanks to John Buchanan for taking on the referee duties on a Father's Day.

Sunday 6th September. The Sunday White course competition. A small field of 10 players in the
contest. Up and coming junior Angus Malcolm (21) scored a fine 42 points to win the day from Justin Smith (13) with 36 points. Balls were won down to 35 points via count back.

A Little Humour.

This cartoon is very appropriate and the changed procedure for moving from the 15th green to the 16th tee and through to the 16th fairway has been implemented to protect players from being hit by errant shots. Make sure the others in your group are aware of the procedure.
