Calendar update...

20/6/2022

With the course condition improving and cart access available, we have reached a point where can schedule the postponed trophy events and the monthly medal. The MiClub fixtures bookings page has been updated with most events, namely the June Monthly medal (16th of July) in conjunction with the Captains Trophy and the Heigwin Cup Presidents Trophy (30th of July).
J.M. Stanford is now the 9th of July and the H. A. Murdoch is the 23rd of July.

We are finalising the Foursomes Championship; Mixed Foursomes; J W Draper and John Owens knock outs; basically need to ensure we do not have clashes with any Sunday bookings.  So we are close to getting this done.

I will send an email in the next couple of days with all the details.

Recent Results....

It is great to see the number of players in competitions increasing as we have been able to open the course to nearly normal conditions.  NOTE: results will be uploaded to GolfLink from this Saturday the 25th June.  The bunkers should be back in play, that's the plan... if the white stakes are still in the bunkers then they are GUR.

Wednesday 15th June Single Stableford
9 Hole Cart Course - 18 competed in this composite course.  The winner was Warwick Keirnan with 22 points and runner up Peter Leon with 20.
18 Hole Course - Philip Joshua won with 35 points from Chris Kunz on 34 points.
Philip also was NTP on the 11th hole and Neil Landry won the Pro-Pin.
Picture
Friday - Nugget Nine
Ash Southon won with 21 points after a very strong start - pars and birdies through the first four holes... I understand the last couple were not a highlight, however.  Peter Whittall was runner up on a count back with 17 points from Sonia Bleakley.
Saturday - 3 Ball Stableford Multiplier - best 2 scores
With an impressive 108 points Cameron Cowen, Samuel Drysdale and Will Clayton won from Simon Kemp, Wayne Nagle and Adem De Manincor with a great score of 104 points.
Robert Eriksson won the NTP on the 11th hole and Clark Gibbons nailed the Pro-Pin.

Monday Madness
John Buchanan
won with 36 points.

Upcoming Events...

As mentioned above we have rescheduled postpones trophies and monthly medals.  July is just around the corner:
Saturday - July 2nd  - Monthly Medal
Saturday - July 9th - J M Stanford Trophy
Sunday - July 10th - Oxley Plate  - mixed medley against Moss Vale - sign up sheet in the Pro Shop - tee times start at 10:30 am - ten teams available.  We have 7 already so get in quick.
Saturday  - July 16th - Captains Trophy and June Monthly Medal

I look forward to seeing you on the course and in the club house enjoying the open fire...

Regards,

Arthur Stone... greenskeeper 1938

13/6/2022

In February this year, Cathy Ashton visited the club to donate her father's golf clubs and "Exercise Book" to the club to remember Arthur Stone contribution to BGC and the NSW Green-keepers Association. The "Exercise Book" was in poor condition and has now been restored back to good health.

The article (see left) is from the Southern Mail, Friday the 18th of January 1952. It is great  to have these items as additions to the clubs long history. It is clear that Arthur was held in high regard as a greenskeeper and a family man in Bowral.

The "Exercise Book"  is a thesis on green keeping in the Sydney Basin region.  When Cathy first contacted us we thought that the book would be a diary of his work on our course.  But it is much more than that, it's a comprehensive work on every aspect of golf course management. A hand written masterpiece.

The book will be "scanned" and added to the BGC website for members to read during windy and cold winter nights.

The photos below are of the book and golf clubs.  Arthurs hickory shaft putter is now hanging from the Members Room sign.  See below....

Thanks go to Darryl for restoration of the hickory clubs.

Course Update...

As most courses in our region are getting back to normal after such an extended wet period, we aim to have carts on the course for members by next Saturday at the latest.  This will mean that the temporary 9 hole cart course will be "retired".  Thanks to Matt and his team and Dad's Army for building these paths.

We will keep you posted by email as to progress this week.

Upcoming events...

With the course improving day by day we can now start to reschedule the postponed monthly medal and trophy competitions.  We expect the course to be back to normal by the beginning of July, so keep an eye on the fixtures list in MiClub bookings to make sure you get the chance to compete for a win.
I look forward to seeing you next Thursday night for our members night and I will provide an update on the course drainage plans... it is coming together!!

Wild winds... do some good

6/6/2022

Course Update...
We continue to have challenges with certain areas of our course mainly due to ground water at the moment.  The strong winds, while somewhat irritating, will dry out our course and make it more enjoyable to play.
The temporary cart course proved popular last Saturday with around 23 rounds, 18 and 9 holes, being played.  This addition resulted in over sixty players enjoying the game, the highest number for some months.
Fingers crossed, this week will allow Matt and his team to mow the majority of the course and minimise the difficulty in finding your ball from a wayward shot into the rough. Keep an eye out for mine, your welcome to them...

Bowral Golf Club History...

As you are all aware, with over 100 years of being a golf club, we will collect a great deal of history and memories.  This is what makes the club, the personal connections, the relationships and friendships.
Over the next few weeks I will be posting a new addition to our history which came to light earlier this year.  After the restoration of a book on the  thesis on greenkeeping in the greater Sydney region by a former greenskeeper for our club in 1938, I welcome Arthur Stone to our history.  His family have donated to the club his greenskeeper thesis (handwritten) and a number of his hickory shafted clubs.  To my mind, Arthur's work is significant to the broader golfing community, so I will take some time to publish this history as accurate as I can.

BGC Woods Head Covers
The last time we offered BGC branded woods cover they were a nice blue woollen mitt.  We've moved on to these handsome offerings.
They are great and available now in the Pro Shop at a value price.
Replace your old tatty head covers with these beauties.
As our Country Membership grows we have introduced a medley trophy for this category.  This is in line with the Lifestyle Cup of recent years.  A very fetching silver bowl has be donated for this event which will be held at the same time as the Lifestyle Cup.
It's all about having something to play for...

Seven played the 9 Hole Cart Course, with Martin Flaxman the winner with 18 points.

It is time to review the fixtures booking list going forward.  Hopefully the improving course conditions will allow our postponed monthly medal and trophies to be scheduled in the near future. Keep an eye out for updates here and in MiClub.

Play well,

Dave Burgess

Course Update...

1/6/2022

It's not a Roman Road but it should do the trick.
This morning we trialled a temporary cart path adjacent to the 5th green and it is working well.  See the photos.
This will allow us to develop more cart paths in the wet areas to enable our cart golfers to play some golf!!!
We will start with a 9 hole course being 5, 6 & 7 then 10 through to 15. This will be a non-handicapped single stableford competition.
In addition, we are repairing the paths from the Pro Shop to the 5th tee. Signage will be posted to direct carts accordingly.

The westerly wind, which might be so cold that you stay in doors, is on the plus side drying out the course.
We will keep you posted on the opening of the 9 hole Cart Course... with the process we made today it maybe open earlier.
