July... winter is still with us

26/7/2021

Course Update...

Picture
14th Hole Bunker
Next time you play the 14th you will notice the RHS bunker has been replaced with a reshaped surround.  Plus the steep bank (wall) below the bunker has been filled to enable a tapered slope around the green.  If you have a spare hour of so later in the week, probably Thursday morning, let me know, as we will be replacing the turf. It will be GUR for a while. (Click on the photos to expand them)
Picture
10th Hole - a potentially dangerous tree has been removed; right hand side at the start of the fairway. If you notice what you think is a safety issue on the course,  please let me know, so it can be assessed.
15th Hole - you may notice some areas of sand between the dam wall and the willows.  This is where the underground storm water pipe has been repaired.  The temporary open drain will be filled in soon.
13th Hole Pond - the water level will be temporarily lowered to enable inspection of the surrounds around the concrete bridge.  This will help with the water and drainage plans for the area.
Thanks for the donations of surplus landscape suppliers. We have bricks, posts and gates so far.  Keep it coming.  It's great to reuse this material in improving the course condition rather than it going to the tip.

The Bruce Smith Cup
Yesterday, ten teams from Bowral contested the Bruce Smith Cup against Moss Vale at Moss Vale golf course.  This contest has been going since 1938, so it is great that it continues and is a part of the golfing tradition in our region.
Needless to say the weather made it a very challenging day for everyone involved and after a four hour plus round the open fire in Dormie House was more than welcome.  Thanks to Moss Vale GC for their hospitality and organisation on the day.
The first group off was the "Battle of the Pros and Champions" - Darryl Purchase & John Mulholland VS Davyd Reeves & Brendan Dodds.  A battle it was, a chip in birdie on the eighteenth by Davyd for a 3 a 3 resulted in a one point win by Moss Vale.
Overall result is, Moss Vale won and retains the cup with a result of 6 1/2 to 3 1/2.  As always the detail shows the result came down to a single points difference in two matches.  Well done Moss Vale.
A big thanks to the Bowral golfers for being up for the challenge.  Next year....

Enjoy your golf and see you out there.

Wild Winter Weather...

19/7/2021

Captain's Trophy
Last Saturday's wild weather, which hit at six am, resulted in the course being closed to carts.  A quick decision was made to postpone the Captain's Trophy to ensure we can maximise the field in the near future. A single Stableford replaced the event with only 41 players in the field.
The rescheduled date for the Captain's Trophy is Saturday  31st of July.
MiClub bookings will be updated accordingly.

Course Care...

Picture
A reminder not to score the greens when marking the ball.  Use a standard ball marker.
Unfortunately this is still occurring.  It damages the greens and they have a hard enough time as it is... Thank you.
Next Monday, 26th of July, we are planning to remove and renovate the 14th Green RHS bunker.  This will require removal of the turf and reshaping of the right hand fringe of the bunker.  Anyone able to assist please let me know, lifting and stacking turf.  8:00am kick off subject to weather.

Have a great week...

Course Update...

I think we all had an eye on the weather forecast last week and not looking forward to a very wet Friday and Saturday.  Fortunately we received only a few millimetres of rain, allowing the course some respite.  While very wet in places the frost early last week did assist in drying out the course somewhat.  Fingers crossed the next two weeks are looking okay.

8th Hole Update

Thanks to Dick Hiser, Paul Pettiford, Pat Donoghue and Craig Houden for undertaking some remedial drainage works on the 8th hole.  When the work was done in late May, the dump truck sank in the mud up to it's axles in a few places.  This essentially created a damming effect which is proving difficult to dry out.  The photos below show the trenches effectively allowing the water to flow to the main drain.

Upcoming Events...

This Saturday is the Captains Trophy handicap stroke event.
First recorded in 1929, the current trophy was donated by Jim Dickson in 1995. Jim was captain from 1992 to 1994.
Bruce Smith Cup - this annual 4BBB event against Moss Vale Golf Club will have 10 teams from Bowral with the competition being played at Moss Vale this year.  The first group off on Sunday morning the 25th of July will be the "Battle of the Pros and Club Champions" - we will be ably represented by Darryl Purchase and John Mulholland.
Finally, the J. W. Draper draw is on the notice board along with the Terms of Competition and the first round is due on or by the 1st of August.

Play well,

Winter Wonderland...

Course Update

Kevin took these photos last Tuesday, a foggy morning followed by the rainbow two hours later.
It's been a tough time for the course with small amounts of rain nearly every day.
Not to be outdone, this photo last Wednesday, after another shower of rain, presented a "double whammy" rainbow. Arching majestically over the roosting flock of Corella, no doubt.

In these wet conditions, a reminder to:
1. Replace your divots and lightly dust them with sand. (As one member asked me recently, "Are the sand boxes ornamental". Somewhat cryptic but you get the point.)
2. Repair your pitch mark plus any others you see while on the greens.
3. NEVER scratch out your nearest to the pin shot with the point of the marker. Our greens have enough to contend without having this inflicted upon them as well. See photo opposite.
Please reinforce this message with your playing partners.

COVID rules

A reminder to bring a mask to golf, this is mandatory for entering the PRO-SHOP and the Clubhouse.  All things going well we will be out of these directives by the end of the week.  Thanks for your support in this difficult time. It's great we can still play the game.

Santa popped in last Friday to assist with the "Christmas in July" take-away.  Appropriately masked up, Santa had his hands full with handing out the goodies. Thanks for everyone supporting the First Friday take-away alternative. Hopefully we get back to normal in the next week or so.
Play well,
