Course Update
  • 265mm of rain was received on the course last week. That is the equivalent of 50 Olympic sized swimming pools, and does not include the water which entered the property from adjoining houses and roads.
  • With the exception of the 15th fairway, the course is drying well. The bunkers have handled the rain event very well and the staff have some very busy times ahead on the mowers.
  • The issue with the flooded 15th fairway is due to a Wingecarribee Council stormwater drain which is blocked. Every time we have a heavy storm, water flows onto the course from Kangaloon Rd via the stormwater pipes, and floods across the 15th fairway. We have contacted the Council many times to get them to come and clear the blockage, but it appears that we are on a 'wait-list'. In the meantime the entire area is marked as 'Compulsory GUR'. There are ropes setup to preclude cart access and drivers of carts are directed onto the maintenance access road from the bridge at the pond until clear of the flooded area.
  • New temporary paths have been laid in the wettest areas of the 8th and 9th fairways. Players will be familiar with the locations on the right hand side of the 8th fairway at the base of the rise, and the right hand side of the 9th fairway at the beginning of the mown fairway. The paths are setup to allow carts to proceed without getting bogged. Please drive over the paths slowly.
  • 15 cm preferred lies are in place in the 'General Area' for the time being. Please check with the pro shop before play to determine the current playing conditions.
  • Could I urge all players to keep up the 'Divot-filling' program and to remember to rake the bunkers after use.
  • Raffle tickets are available for purchase in the pro shop. The proceeds go towards funding the costs incurred by the PGA Trainees during their course. Anthony Rath is our trainee and would greatly appreciate your support. Tickets are priced at $4 and the impressive list of prizes include a set of fully fitted Titleist T-200 Irons, a Scotty Cameron putter, a Riverside Oaks 'Stay and Play' package, and several other items.
Coming Events - Course
The recent course closure has created minor mayhem with the playing calendar. The following is a summary of the changes. Please refer to the online calendar for up-to-date fixtures.
  • The Patron's Trophy will be held on Saturday 17th April. This event also serves as the qualification process for the Club Foursomes Championships. The top 8 placed teams will progress into a knockout playoff. The 1/4 final matches must be completed before Sunday 6th June, the semi final will be held on Sunday the 4th July and the final (36 holes) will be held on Sunday 11th July.
  • The Arthur Brassey knockout completion dates have been slid. The first round must now be completed by Sunday 4th April, the 1/4 finals by Sunday 9th May. The semi final will be held on Sunday 16th May and the final will be played mid-morning on Saturday 22nd May.
  • Saturday 10th April is the medal day in conjunction with the Austen Richardson Tankard.
  • Sunday 11th April is our Jubilee Cup, an open NSWGA Vardon and Senior Vardon event. The competition a scratch event (with a handicap event held in conjunction) and is open to players with a maximum AGU handicap of 12. Entry forms are available on the main notice board. Cost is $55 which includes lunch.
  • Wednesday 14th April is the Boxmor Trophy. This event pits the President's team against the Captain's team. Last outing saw the Captain take the trophy and as this will be my last trophy event as Captain, I'm sure the President will be similarly generous with the outcome!! The format is 4BBB stableford. The usual prizes are on offer plus each member of the winning team will receive a ball. The trophy will be decided by aggregating the top 10 pairs for each team. To book for a place in the President's team use slot 1 or 2 on the booking sheet, and slot 3 or 4 on the sheet if you wish to play on the winning (oops! I mean Captain's) team. Contact the pro shop for assistance if necessary.
  • Saturday 1st May is medal day in conjunction with the President's Trophy. This is the prelude to the Anniversary Dinner, which is held later that evening.
Coming Events - Clubhouse
The following posters highlight the events which are being held over the coming months. Please check with the club for booking availability, as slots fill fast.
  • The clubhouse will be closed on Good Friday and potentially on Easter Sunday (depends on bookings, check before coming).
  • Competition presentations have recommenced with the next one on Wednesday 31st March.
  • Members may have noticed the presence of workmen around the outside of the clubhouse. These men are doing the repairs required to the exterior prior to the commencement of the painting programme. Painting will commence in April.
Those of you with a keen eye might have noticed that the carpet in the Oxley room has been replaced. Thanks to a super effort from Kevin and Tim, the room looks greatly improved.

The inclement weather precluded any competition play over the reporting period. A reminder to those players vying for the Summer Eclectic that this coming Wednesday is the final day to have an effect on your score. The Winter version will be delayed until the implementation of the Mi Club computer upgrade, has been completed in May.
The Rules Quiz
This coming Saturday will see a return to presentations after the rain. The question for this presentation can be located in my blog of 8th March. Come along and try your luck. The putter has been looking very lonely and unused hanging above the Members' lounge.

Course Update
  • The weather over the past week has created considerable flooding across the entire course. As I advised members via email today, a number of fixtures will be moved as a result. The course is currently closed until the end of the week, but this situation is likely to continue well into next week. See the gallery of photos below to get a sense of the issue.
Coming Events - Course

The following changes have been added to the playing calendar. Members are urged to check the calendar regularly to confirm future changes.

The semi final will be held on Saturday 24th and the final on Saturday 8th May  between the morning and afternoon competition fields.

  • The Boxmor Trophy (President V Captain) will be played on the Wednesday 14th April to allow the event to be staged before the AGM the following day.
  • The Jubilee Cup is scheduled for Sunday 11th April. This is a scratch Vardon event and is open to players with an AGU handicap of 12 or less. There is a Senior event within the main event. Wednesday 17th March. St Patrick's Day. Despite some inclement weather, 75 players turned out for the inaugural staging of this event. Thanks to Kevin Kenny, Simon Kemp, John Mulholland and Vince O'Connor for kindly providing the prizes for the winning team. Thanks also to those players who dressed up to show their support. The winning team was comprised of Patrick Lane, Wayne Ison, Bruce Frankland and Chris Harvey and they won with a score of 85 points on a count back from the team of Terry Downing, Norris Dudgeon, Roberto Ratalino and Chris Kunz. As is the usual case, any prizes not collected at the presentation are held at the bar.
The Eagle's Nest was not emptied, the NTP 11th was won by John Ferguson and the Pro pin by Roberto Ratalino. We enjoyed the company of a visitor from Warringah GC.

As a result of the terrible weather, no further competitions were held over the past week.

The First Blog.
The following is an extract of my welcome letter in the 1st blog dated Monday 8th April 2019.
"I will continue to drive golf at our club into the future, but will do so whilst being mindful of the history and traditional values which have formed the club thus far. I believe my role is to represent the game for all our golfers, not just a select few. I don't rush to decisions but I'm not averse to change if I consider the change will benefit golf at BGC".
So, did I change things at all, or are things just as they were 2 years ago? You decide.
Course Update
  • The poles and netting which has been a feature beside the 14th green for many years were recently removed. The netting achieved little in the way of the protections initially envisaged and instead had become a feeding station for the many hundreds of Correllas feeding regularly on the lichen growing on the netting. The local rule which was in place dealing with interference with the netting is now withdrawn and the drop zone stake will be removed.
  • There will be another working Bee next Monday (22nd March) to complete the bunker tuning at the 10th and 11th greens. Meeting at 07:30 at the 10th green (weather permitting) with rakes, shovels and spades. Should take no more than 2 hours with a good turnout.
Coming Events- Course
  • Wednesday 17th is the St Patrick's Day Irish 4Ball event. Best 2 Stableford scores each hole count for the team score.
  • Saturday 20th is the next Trophy day with the Warwick Armstrong Cup. Single Stableford format.
  • Saturday 27th is the Patron's Trophy event which also serves as the qualification round of the Club Championships in Foursomes.
  • Sunday 28th is the final day for completion of the first round of the Arthur Brassey Knockout.
  • A reminder of the Easter dates Friday 2nd - Monday 5th April.
  • Saturday 10th April is the April Monthly Medal in conjunction with the Austen Richardson Tankard.
  • Sunday 11th April is the Jubilee Cup.

Whitehorse Cup
The following competition report was received from Don Barker.
On Sunday 14th March, Bowral 1 played Moss Vale 2 at St George's Basin Golf Club in very poor weather conditions. Unfortunately, Bowral 1 lost the event with a score of 2 1/2 to 4 1/2. As a result Bowral have been knocked out and Moss Vale will progress to the semi finals.
Congratulations to all the guys who represented the club throughout the competition. They gave a fine account of themselves and of our club. Well done, and bring on next year.

Course Update
  • Dare I say that I've noticed a slight improvement in the repair of divots across the course. However, don't drop the ball now, keep up the good work and be sure to thank anyone, on my behalf, for repairing a divot they did not cause.
  • Renovations began today to core and sand all the greens, including the practice green. Brushing-in will be completed tomorrow (Tuesday) in time to re-open the course on Wednesday.
  • The working Bee which was held today (thanks to Norris Dudgeon and Adam and Colin from the greens staff) completed the final shaping and filling of the bunker on the left of the 10th green. A granite composite step has been fitted to improve access and is considered an immoveable obstruction, from which relief may be taken in accordance with rule 16.1 (relief to be taken outside the bunker, as the step is outside the line of the bunker edge). Players have been neglecting their responsibilities by not raking the bunkers after use.
Coming Events - Golf
  • Wednesday 10th March is the Greens Keepers Revenge 3 person Ambrose.
  • Wednesday 17th March is the St Patrick's Day Irish 4 ball event.

  • Saturday 27th March is the Patron's Trophy, which also serves as the qualifying round for the Club Championships in Foursomes knockout.
  • Sunday 28th March is the last day for completion of the first round of the Arthur Brassey Handicap Matchplay knockout.
  • The BGC Annual General Meeting will be held in the clubhouse on the evening of 15th April.

Whitehorse Cup
Congratulations to the members of the BGC #1 team who successfully made their way through the elimination final with a great 5 matches to 2 win against The Grange. The match was played at the Jamberoo GC and featured several matches being determined at the 18th green. Good luck to the team for next Sunday as they play a 1/4 final against Moss Vale #2 at St Georges Basin GC.

The Whale's Tooth
This Trophy competition is an annual event between BGC and The Australian GC. This has ensured that the two clubs maintain the very close association which has been fostered since the 1930's. In the 1960's the event was formalised by Royce Jeffries (The AGC) and Harry Murdoch (BGC) and the trophy was produced by BGC following the first event. The original Trophy was lost in a fire which destroyed the AGC clubhouse in 1982 and was replaced with the current one. The event alternates each year, and this year was hosted in magnificent style by The AGC.

The event of the day consisted of a number of 4BBB competitions which provided 1 point to the appropriate team for a win and 1/2 a point for a tie. After the completion of the event the final score was 11 matches to 5, in favour of The Australian GC. Congratulations to everyone for a very close-fought competition with many matches being decided by just one point. Congratulations to the pairing of John Mulholland and Brian Hanrahan who were the best placed BGC team with a match winning score of 42 points. Congratulations to the other winning team members, Russell and Meeghan Bourne, Will Clayton and Jim Phillips, Christine Levy and Netti Buchanan, and Maggie McKenzie and Julie Jeffery. Congratulations also to Ray Clayton, who participated in his 50th Whale's Tooth competition.

The Rules Quiz.
Last Blog I asked a series of questions which relate to Score card procedures. Specifically, what were the responsibilities of : The Player, The Marker and the Committee (the club).
Essentially, the Player is responsible for 3 items on a score card. 1. Ensuring the correct handicap is displayed, 2. Ensuring the correct RAW score is shown for each hole and 3. ensuring that the card is signed after completion. The Marker is responsible for 2 items, 1. Ensuring the correct RAW score is shown for each hole and 2. signing the card after completion.
The Committee (the club) is responsible for providing the player with a card bearing the player's name and the event date. (The handicap may also be pre-printed, but the player has the responsibility for ensuring it is correct). The Committee is also responsible for converting the players RAW score into the appropriate format as determined by the format of the competition (e.g. into Stableford points or +/- for a PAR event) and to complete tabulation of the RAW scores into a Total score for competition entry. The Committee is also responsible for determining any count back procedures.

The situation which will form the quiz at the next presentation (20th March) is the following.
A Player marks, lifts and replaces their ball on a putting surface. As the Player moves away the ball rolls a small distance and comes to a stop. The Player does not notice the movement but a fellow golfer does see the movement and advises the Player of the situation.
Question : What is the Player required to do, and what is the penalty should the Player not follow the correct procedure?
