Dad's Army, Drains and Longer Days...

29/8/2022

Dad's Army does it again... Thank you...
Every Thursday morning our Dad's Army teams up with Matt Morris and his team to improve the course; small step by small step.  Whether it is splitting firewood, mulching, chain sawing, gardening, cleaning, painting; all these activities every week over the years results in a better course for us all.  As winter closes, I forgot to mention the responsible burning off that they do - I think it's their favourite job of them all.
Last week's work was the improvement to the 11th tee surrounds - see the action shot below and the final result!!

Progress on course drainage...

We are "moving forward" with course drainage. The swales drain across the 3rd and 2nd holes will have bridges installed later this week (weather being kind!). The boundary drain on the first hole was cleaned out on Friday and we moved onto the  start of the 3rd hole today.  We are opening up a drain which was closed in some years ago and a 90 mm pipe installed. With the saturated conditions this pipe is not effective, so it is going. Swale drains will be added to the right hand side of the 16th to feed into this reopened drain. Some photos to give the idea of what we're doing...

Friday's Golden Nugget
A nugget it was with a strong field of men and women.
Christopher Dyer won with 22 points from Simon Kemp with 18.
A great way to spend a couple of hours at the end of the week.
Saturday - Captains Trophy
With carts on the full course we had 67 competitors for the Trophy event. A good result considering the rain squalls in the afternoon and a heavy course. Thankfully the fire was on in the club house to warm the weary and wet on their return. So the winner was Taffy McCarten with a very solid Nett 66, a clear winner on the day.  As he said "the putts just kept going in...".  Runner up was Kevin Barry with a Nett 68.  Good golf.
NTP 11th Hole - John Mellen
Pro Pin - Tony Hobson

Picture
Sunday  - Medley
A good role up with 18 players.  Winning with a great 41 points was Samuel Drysdale. Ash Southon was second few points back but still a good result - 36 points.
See you one the course in the Spring Time...

Course work commences...

22/8/2022

Drain Maintenance
For a few months we have been planning to maintain the open drains on the course as a part of the overall drainage plan.  Getting hold of contractors and having a course dry enough to start has been difficult.  The good news is we started today. With the recent dryer course conditions and the higher than average rain forecast we made a decision to start on the 2nd and 3rd holes, the aim is to get the surface water flowing and any future storm water to run off the course.  This work is not the final drainage solution for these holes and underground drainage systems will be detailed in the near future. The open drains between the 4th hole and 3rd hole have been cleaned out and extended to capture more surface water.  A swale has been cut across the 3rd fairway and the start of the 2nd hole. These will be seeded and the grass will grow and they will be back to fairway conditions in the near future. Keep a look out for other areas which will be worked on.

Congratulations to our Patron Brian Lamb
Last week Brian had his 90th Birthday and a small celebration and birthday cake at the Club last Wednesday with friends.
Correction:
The dozen framed photographs of Scottish golf courses that hang in the corridor outside the Locker Rooms were incorrectly claimed to be a gift from former member Jim Draper in an article two weeks ago. They were in fact donated by a current member well-known for his love of golf statistics, after he down-sized to the area in Nov 2018.
He collected the images when on a playing tour of great Scottish courses in 2009.
Jim donated the one in the picture to the right: Kings Course at Gleneagles, Royal Troon, Turnberry and The Old Course.
Apologies for the confusion.

Looking forward to spring with some warmer weather...

Looks like a dry week!!!

15/8/2022

The short term forecast looks promising; for a week or so at least.  The longer term forecast is not so promising, however.  We will be starting some drainage maintenance next week, this will not be the major works but it will get water off the course and will help.  Every bit will help.
It was good to get the 9 hole Cart Course going again and this will be going all this week.  Thanks to Matt and his team with the additional wood chips  on the paths.

Trophy Events...

We completed a couple more Trophy events during the week, The Arthur Brassey KO has been running since February and was completed last Thursday!!
Picture
Daniel Weekes and Terry Downing competed in the finals of the Arthur Brassey.  I understand it was not "pretty golf" not helped with the heavy conditions.  The result was Daniel won 4&3.
The photo is from Daniel's winning round against Ash Southon some time earlier this year.
The John Owens 4BBB Trophy
This trophy event is usually a knock out competition scheduled for earlier in the year.  In order to get this competition completed it was held as a "sudden death" knock last Saturday in conjunction with the single stableford.  The winners were Piero Dal Bianco and Alan Turpie with 41 points on a count back.
J W Draper - Foursomes Handicap Matchplay
The draw has been completed and is posted on the notice board, as well as in the photo adjacent.
The first round is to be completed by the 28th of August, the second round by the 12th of September and the finals by the 26th of September.  Dates are weather dependant.

Records broken... putting that is

8/8/2022

It could be argued that golf is a game of statistics and data. From entering scores onto a Score Card to the technology of Trackman and websites like golf stats.com; there is data on every player, every hole and every swing. If you what it...  For some it is a very personal thing to record the number of putts per round, the number of fairways hit or "greens hit in regulation".  It all comes down to how you enjoy the game and want to remember the experience. Next is a short story of one of our members who loves golf and loves statistics.
Picture
Chris in his wet weather golf Wellies earlier this year  - a very smart investment.
Chris Kunz (off a hcp of 16) who has played golf since 1969, keeps detailed records on his rounds. He freely admits that his golf apart from his putting is mostly (quote) “crap” but finally managed to break his own Bowral putting record of 173 consecutive holes without a three-putt (set on Jan 23 last year) on the 13th hole last Saturday.

Kunz, who has an all-time average of 29.79 putts per round on Bowral, always putts with a glove on because he "cannot be bothered taking it off and then puting it on again”. Alas, as the saying goes,  'it takes eternal vigilance’ and he three-putted the 17th from above the hole, setting a new personal mark of 177 consecutive holes.

We look forward to seeing how the next 18 months or so pans out for Chris, we wish him well in breaking the next "No Three Putt" streak of 177 holes.

Upcoming Events...

The Whales Tooth Trophy
Unfortunately due to the ongoing heavy course conditions and the uncertainty of carts being on the course the Whales Tooth Trophy (BGC vs The Australian GC) planned for the 8th of September has had to be postponed.  This is the third time this event has been postponed this year, we all are tenacious and will try to get another date later in the year.

J W Draper Foursomes Handicap Knockout
The draw for this competition will be done this week and sent out to the contenders.  Due to the weather there will be some flexibility in the completion dates for the rounds, please contact me if you need time extensions... within reason, it would be good to get this knockout finished as soon as practical.
When you walk into the club house past the locker rooms you will enjoy looking at a series of prints of the "Open Championship Courses". These were gifted by Jim Draper, who joined the club in 1984 and was Scottish Amateur  Champion in 1954.

John Owens - 4 BBB Trophy
Next Saturday the John Owens will be a one round knock out event.  This event was washed out earlier in the year so we have shortened it to a 'sudden death knockout".

The Patrons Trophy - Foursomes Qualifying
This has been rescheduled for the SATURDAY the 24th of September. The draw for the Tom McKay Trophy - Foursomes Championship will done based on the top 8 teams who want to enter this championship event.

MiClub Bookings
Please refer to the MiClub bookings page for all the rescheduled events to ensure you don't miss out on the competitions you want to win!! Needless to say it will be a busy few months to the end of the year.

Recent Results...

It is unfortunate that the course conditions are not allowing carts to be used and I feel for all those cart players who are missing out on their rounds of golf.  This situation is out of a mere mortals control but we will do our best to get carts "back out there".
Wednesday - Single Stableford
Forty players competed with John Jones winning with 34 points from John Ferguson with 35. John Jones won the Pro Pin and John McGuire won the NTP on the 11th.  Well done to the Johns'.
Picture
Friday's Golden Nugget
The size of the Nugget reflects the size of the field but that's not a bad thing, it shows some fortitude to get out there and play. Charles Vaughan-Smith won with 17 points from Robert Perry with 16 on a count back.  To the ten competitors; well done.
