Course Update
The recent (and ongoing) rain has enhanced the course. Whilst there are some areas with minor flooding, the course is in great condition. Ironically, the watering system pumps recently received some replacement parts which allows the staff to use all 3 pumps for the first time in over 4 years.
I remind all players to keep up the divot repair progress. This rain will have washed away the sand in many of the divots.

Saturday 17th October. The final round of the newly re-established 'Watson Cup'. This cup was donated by Thomas Watson in 1935. Tom was a visiting club member and was the manager of Tooth & Co in Sydney. He was a subscriber to the 'Debenture' issue of 1939. The event was only held on one occasion (in 1937), and was won by P.W. McIntyre.  P.W. was the manager of the Bowral branch of the CBC Bank. The trophy vanished shortly after and only returned to the club after P.W died in 1961. A Little Humour.
"What kind of player is Johnny Bean?" asked one member of his caddie on the day before the competition.
"Hopeless." The caddie replied, "He slices and hooks and goes into every bunker. He seems to think that the way to the hole is via the rough."
"That's great news" responded the member.
"Oh not really sir, he'll still beat you!"

Course Update
Players over the past few weeks have commented about the exceptionally high standard at which our course is being  presented. Matt, Adam, Colin and Tom have put so much of themselves into the course and we, the  players, are extremely grateful.
The divot situation is improving slowly, and I thank the players for their increased diligence. Don't let up now though, keep putting your finish on the course for everyone else to enjoy.

Wednesday 7th October. A great opportunity for everyone to relax between rounds of the Club Championship qualifying. A lovely day with 58 players in the field. Darryl Purchase (0) and Dick Hiser (14) posted a collective 44 points to beat Stephen Heywood (37) and John Bragg (22) on a count back The best single score went to Brian Hanrahan (14) with his 41 points. Friday 9th October. The "Nugget". 18 players (11 men and 7 ladies) turned out throughout the day to enjoy the course setup and preparation for the following day's Championships. John Bragg (22) posted 21 points to beat Fran Dubiez (26) and Pam Barker (10) by one stroke. In fourth was Mary O'Connor (22) with 20 points. Balls were won down to 18 points via count back. With daylight saving time now established and the weather warming up, a late afternoon tee time followed by a refreshing beverage seems to be a popular addition to the Nugget routine.

Saturday 10th October. Another very busy day on the course. This week saw the final rounds played in the Veteran's Plate (for players 65 and over), and the Lifestyle Championship cup. This year the Veteran's Plate went down to the wire with a count back required to determine the victor. John Mellen (14)  improved on his runner-up result in 2019 to claim the title with  scores of net 71 and 66 for a total of 137 from Roberto Ratalino (20). Roberto showed great consistency with his two net scores of 68 and 69 to lose via the count back. Congratulations both players on some great golf.
The Lifestyle Championship was won for 2020 by Scott Olding (12) with scratch scores of 93 and 84 and a total of 177.

Sunday 11th October. The Bradford cup, the Junior Club Championship. For the first time in 14 years there were sufficient numbers in the junior ranks to allow the hosting of this event. 10 players entered on a beautiful morning, and it was great to see an excellent group of young players looking nervous on the 1st tee. After 18 holes of Stableford competition, Brodi Bell (45) emerged the victor with a score of 39 points. Brodi is just 11 years old and will no doubt be a player to watch for in years to come. In second place with a score of 35 points was Angus Malcolm (15). Well done to all who entered the competition, you've done both yourselves and the club proud.
Monday 12th October. Monday Madness. Four players in the field today. Bob Duffin (25) scored 22 points to win the day. Still requesting feedback on your preference of format for the Monday competition. Email me at bgcclubcaptain@gmail.com
The Club Championship Draw
Following intense scrutiny the following draws have been produced. They are available on the club notice board and in the pro shop. Please ensure you fill in the results after each match is completed. The 1/4 finals (i.e. the first round) must be completed on or by Sunday 25th October, the semi final on or by Sunday 8th November, and the final will be held on Sunday 22nd November. Congratulations to everyone who participated in this year's Championship qualification, and good luck to those going into the knockout phase. Just a reminder, the Open is played over 36 holes, B and C grades over 18 holes of Match Play.

  • The Greens Staff are to be roundly congratulated for the presentation of the course for the Club Championships. The greens are (in my opinion) a week off being at their very best, so this coming weekend should be a cracker!
  • Please, please, please fill in your divots and the occasional aeration holes where you find them. Pitch marks also. When I was first mentored into golf, my mentor advised me that it was good golf etiquette to repair not just your own pitch mark, but at least one other. Perhaps a good reminder.

  • Next Saturday is the final round for qualifying in the Club Championships. Players need to advise the pro shop of their intentions in regards to the options available. Your options are ;- 1. Play only the daily stroke round (i.e. not enter the Championships), or 2.  Allow your score to be considered for the 'Open' grade if your Daily handicap is 13 or greater (note, players with a Daily Handicap of 12 or less are in the 'Open' grade regardless), or 3. Allow your score to be considered for your grade Championship only. Players who allow their score to be considered for the 'Open' grade and who do not qualify for that grade, are still considered for their applicable grade.
  • Next Saturday is also the final round for the Lifestyle Cup, and the Veterans Plate. Players need to advise the pro shop of their status for the Veterans' Plate, as it is open to players of 65 years and over.
  • Next Saturday is the 2nd round of the Watson Cup. The final round is the following weekend.
  • Next Sunday (11th October) we will hold the Bradford Cup. This is essentially the Junior Club Championship. It is a mixed event, and all eligible juniors are encouraged to enter. The format is 18 holes of Stableford competition on the Blue course. We have a number of juniors in the club at present and it will be great to see the Trophy contested again after a 15 year absence.
  • Don't miss out on the 28th October Wednesday round. This is the first 'Trophy' for a weekday. The Crazy tee day has tee locations which extend the length of the course a little and we have re-rated this course at Par 72. The competition is a 4BBB with no single event in conjunction. The Prize is the 'Cock of the Walk' pewter mugs. More info as we get closer to the day.
  • November 3rd is a Melbourne Cup Medley day. Details will be advised when available.
  • Two golf fitting days have been arranged in November. Monday 16th will be Titleist again, while Monday 23rd will be Callaway. Make bookings at the pro shop.

It's been a very busy time on the course over the past week. We averaged in excess of 100 players on the course every day.

Wednesday 30th September. The final competition for the month, and a very changeable day was experienced. Sun, showers, cold, warm, the full spectrum. A great midweek field of 84 players took to the course. Jim Larkin (13) swept all before him with a fine 42 points. Best graded scores were 'A' grade, Kevin Kenny (2) 38 points, 'B' grade Alan Lindsay (22) with 37 points via a count back and 'C' grade Chris Harvey (24) with 37 points. Balls were won down to 35 points via a count back.

Friday 2nd October. The "Nugget". A wonderfully fine day for golf. 36 players in the field with 10 ladies and 26 men. First place went to Penny Lawless (47) with 24 points, 2nd to Meeghan Bourne (44) with 22 points, 3rd to Sonya Bleakley (35) with 21 points via a count back from 4th, Alan Turpie (23). Balls were won down to 18 points via a count back.

Saturday 3rd October. This was about as perfect a day for golf as it gets. 102 players in the field for the Monthly Medal and the first round of the Club Championships, the Watson Cup, the Veterans' Plate and the Lifestyle Cup. The progress scores for the Championships are included below. The Monthly medals for October were won by, 'A' Grade, James Pinkstone (9) with a net 69 from James Rowe (12) with net 70 on a count back. 'B' Grade, Norm Dodds (20) with a net 64 from Robert Eriksson (19) with net 68 on a count back. 'C' Grade, Chris Barry (35) with a net 64 from Don Orrock (24) with net 65. The balls were won down to net 73 via a count back. The fact that only 10 out of the 102 players equalled or beat their handicap was a testament to the difficulty the course presents when set for a medal day.

The following are the 15 top provisional standings for each grade after the first round of the club Championships. (Players are requested to ensure they advise the pro shop of their intentions in regard to which grade they wish to contest).

Sunday 4th October. Just 4 players in the field. Ash Southon (15) posted 33 points to claim the prize. Balls were won down to 29 points.

Monday 5th October. "Monday Madness". Again a small field. This time played over 18 holes due to the Veterans being on the course, and not creating a 'blending' issue. Ash Southon (14) beat Nick Reinhard by 6 shots for back to back wins and 36 points in the process.

Michelle Di Natale claims another title.
We have been advised that Michelle has claimed another win in a major event.  The Liverpool Cup was held on Wednesday 30 September.  It is a Jean Derrin 'Vardon' event and as such is open to players with a GA handicap of less than 14.4. Michelle, who is currently playing off GA 0.1, won the event with an impressive scratch score of 76.  Par on this course is 74 and the Scratch Rating is 75.  Well done Michelle!
