In Memoriam.
Being the Captain of Bowral Golf Club brings with it a great sense of pride, passion and purpose. In this last week we lost a past Club Captain, and it is suitable that I give recognition to his passing.
Peter Kenneth Douglas was born on the 7th of February 1935 and had reached the age of 85 when he died on the 24th June 2020. Peter was BGC Club Captain from 1986 to 1988. He will be long remembered for his ability on the golf course having won the Club Championship on no less than 6 occasions. He was also in the winning pair of the Club Championships in Foursomes 7 times and the Club Mixed Foursomes Championships 9 times. A combination of successes not achieved either before or since his time. His great friend Ray Clayton provided a tableau of remembrance last weekend. Characters such as Peter Douglas are the stitches from which the fabric of our great club is built. He will be remembered.
Course Update
  • Players will have noticed a significant number of areas of the course which are currently identified as GUR. The areas which have been indicated as compulsory are the repairs to the rear of the 1st green, the repairs beside the 3rd green, the new fairway on the 4th hole and the area to the left of the 8th green. Other areas shown as GUR are not compulsory. See your score card for more detail.
  • The Paths Project commences next Monday morning (weather permitting). The paths impacted by this first stage are the 6th tee to 7th tee, the 10th tee to the 10th fairway, the 10th green to the 11th tee and the path beside the 12th tee. The 6th hole will be closed for the day and the tees on the other affected holes will be positioned well forward to avoid any danger.
  • The full length of the 4th hole will return for play from the 4th July.

Coming Events
  • Next Saturday, 4th July, is the next Monthly medal day.
  • Commencing Monday 6th July, the 'Monday Madness' competition will become a 9-hole event, played on the Yellow course. Competition fees and prizes are as per the 'Nugget' competition. Note: the 6th hole will be closed on the 6th July due to the path construction work, so the 11th will be used instead. Scores on this day will not be processed for handicaps.
  • Saturday 18th July is the Captains Trophy event, 18 hole stroke.
  • Saturday 25th July is the President V Captain event for the Boxmor Trophy. The event will be a 4BBB normal daily competition, however pairs will have the opportunity to sign up to either the President's or Captain's team (sign-up sheet is available in the pro shop and on the main noticeboard). Pairs will then be drawn at random to create matches. The results for each match will be taken from the better-ball results returned by each pair on the day. Each match will provide 1 point towards the Boxmore Trophy result. The sign-up sheet will close after play is completed on the Wednesday prior to the 25th.

  • Divots! Divots! Divots!  Pleeeeeeeeeze everyone, repair your divots (and any others you come across). Make sure to have a sand bucket with you at all times, (even when practicing!) and use it. Every shot will require some sort of turf repair.
  • A reminder that the "Monday Madness" competition format changes to a Yellow course 9-hole on Monday 6th July.
  • The Paths project gets underway on the 6th July on the 6th, 7th, 10th and 12th holes.
  • The area to the north of the 8th fairway and green is very soft underfoot. This area receives almost no sunlight during the Winter months and as a result remains soft and wet for most of this period. This year the area is wetter than usual, so the area has been roped-off and GUR established. 3 Drop zones with Blue stakes have been positioned on the other side of the fairway (in the rough) for players to use. Use the most appropriate zone. (See the photos below.)
  • The John Owens draw is displayed on both the pro shop and main clubhouse notice boards. There are tee times established for each 'Match' on the relevant Sundays.
  • The club kitchen wash-bay floor was in urgent need of repair, and over the weekend the repair process was commenced. As might be expected, in a building as old as our clubhouse, more work was revealed when the old floor covering was removed. Thankfully one of our members came to our assistance and is fixing the problem. The new floor covering will be completed by next weekend. There will hopefully be no interruption in the kitchen operation during this time.
  • A new cart path is being established beside the cart storage shed to improve access. In addition, a cart wash-bay will be constructed to reduce some of the drainage issues in the area above the shed entry.
  • Members are reminded of the following regarding annual fee renewal. Payments are due by July 1, non- financial members after July 31 will be removed from the membership database.
Payment options are available on playing categories, please contact accounts@bowralgolfclub.com.au, or if you would like to discuss your membership options please contact Kevin Kenny.

Saturday 20th June. The H A Murdoch Trophy day. Another large field of 105 players enjoyed superb weather and produced some fine results in the process. David McGinnes (18) posted 40 points to secure the trophy from Bruce Windybank (28) with 38 points. The daily Stableford competition was won in fine style by Sam Mulholland (12) with 42 points. Best in 'A' grade was David Spies (7) with 40, 'B' grade went to David McGinness and 'C' Grade to Bruce Windybank. Balls were won down to 33 points via count back.

The 3 juniors in the field finished in 1st, 3rd and 5th. Lachlan Malcolm (23) posted 36 points to beat Scott Olding (16) via count back.

Course Update
  • There is a new staff member at BGC. Brad Johnson joined the team in the past 2 weeks from Moss Vale. Members may have seen him behind the bar or out on the course delivering the refreshments. Brad plays off a handicap of 8, and is keen to get some time on the course with the members.
  • The Paths Project will commence (weather permitting) on Monday 6th July with the construction of the path from the 6th tee to the 7th tee, and the re-furbishment of the paths from the 10th tee and to the 12th tee. The Monday Madness competition moves to a 9-hole format from this date, so the 6th hole will be closed for the day and players will use the 11th hole for the day. Players wishing to play beyond the 6th hole will find the 7th and 10th holes shortened to allow for the path work to be completed without risk to the greens staff.
  • All members should by now have received their renewal fee advice by either mail or email. If you have not received your fee advice, please contact the office.
  • The recent announcement by the NSW State Government to allow groups of up to 20 gives us the ability to now play in 4s during our busy competition days. This Wednesday was originally slated to be our June Open Day, but this event was cancelled some time ago. Unfortunately I was remiss in not ensuring that the setup was changed to 3s. So the event has been setup as a single Stableford instead of a 4BBB and players may book in a group of 3 or 4.
  • There is growing issue across the course of players not repairing divots. Fairways after fairways are being left with untended divots. I came across the one in the photo in the middle of the 13th fairway, I nearly fell into it!! Come on everyone, lift your game. The course is being delivered to us in fantastic condition, it's up to all players to keep it that way. Thank you.
  • A new prize schedule comes into use from tomorrow. The details are available in the pro shop, on the club notice board and on the club website. The new schedule is for use with all Mens and Mixed competitions. First use will be next Wednesday 17th June.

I truly cannot describe how delicious the Pork Belly was last weekend. Scrumptious!!!
The following is the email from Tim Davis covering the menu for the coming weekend.

This is week 12 of our takeaway menus!  Can you believe it?  Last week the kitchen team did an amazing job.  Halfway through service we lost all power to the club and surrounding area, so although the meal was cooked, packaging was finished and collected by candle light!

This week, the pick-up day is only Friday.

The menu is:

2 course Meal (BGC Members $25 per person, non members $35 per person)

Main:
Chunky Beef, Guiness and Mushroom Pie, topped with pea puree and sweet potato mash
Dessert:
Lime Tart

Soup ($10 per person):
Carrot and Red Lentil

We are still offering our entire wine list for takeaway at a 10% discount.

Contactless payment by EFTPOS or Member Account remains the preferred payment method.

Please order by emailing events.at.bgc@gmail.com or phoning 4861 1042 (option 4), with the number of meals and selections.  Orders must be received by 5pm on Tuesday 16 June, 2020.

Wednesday 10th June. This was our annual 'limited club' Ambrose event. This year the limit was 4 clubs. There was some interesting banter in the clubhouse following the event about which clubs were taken for the round. It seemed that a dedicated putter was the most discarded club. The team of Harry Caust (18), Craig Houden (18) and Clark Gibbons (11) notched up a net 59 to win the event. Who says you need 14 clubs!!! In 2nd was the team of Rob Humphreys (26), Peter Cottee (18) and Chris Chiu (35) with a net 61 5/6 and in 3rd, the team of Roy Reynolds (31), James Burkitt (14) and Andrew Tomkins (17), with a net score of 62 2/3. 75 players in the field on a very showery day.
Picture

Friday 12th June. The "Nugget". 33 players in the field with 16 men and 17 women. Jane Kilmister (43) posted 21 points to win the event from Kevin Burke (31) with 20 points. Balls were won down to 18 points via count back.

Saturday 13th June. A great field of 109 players enjoyed a fine day and a course which played rather long after the rain during the week. Simon Taufel (16) posted 40 points to win the day with the best 'A' grade score coming from Jonnie Walker (14) with 37 points on count back. The  'B' grade went to John Oakes (19) with 36 points and 'C' grade to Nicholas Winstone (26) with 39 points. The balls were won down to 32 points on count back.

Sunday 14th June. This event attracted 18 players with Wayne Frye (20) posting 33 points to win. In 2nd was Christian Hernandez (23) with 32 points. Balls won down to 29 points via count back.

Monday 15th June. "Monday Madness". Only 7 players in the field and the White course playing tough. The 32 points posted by Alec Dietsch (11) was sufficient to take the prize from Chris Chui (33) with 30. Balls down to 29 points via count back.

A Little Humour

THE LOST CITY

A team of archeologists had been toiling deep in the Amazon Jungle for months and months, clearing choking undergrowth away from the faint traces of the great Lost City.

Their wonderment grew with each passing day as they revealed more of what had been hidden by the jungle for millennia.  They discovered broad winding avenues with giant flagstones; the avenues all leading to circular areas every few hundred metres, each of which had a perfectly circular hole cut into it.  It had be..................an ancient
golf course!!!!

The find of the century, the archeologists thought.  Imagine, ancient tribal people playing golf!!  Any doubt was dispelled by the discovery of drawings showing human figures using primitive types of golf clubs.

The archeologists knew that tribal oral traditions passed down legends of their ancestors, so they set about interviewing the local tribesmen.  Amazingly, members of the tribe still told tales of their ancient forebears who followed a daily ritual with clubs and balls......until.....?????   What happened, what was the mystery????

One archeologist was speaking to a wizened elder through an interpreter.  "Imagine," the archeologist said, "golf was played here for centuries, then it simply disappeared from history, not reappearing until the 15th century in Europe.  If only we knew why they gave up golf ...... ask the elder if his tribe's oral histories say anything about the nature of the tragedy that forced his ancestors to give up the game."

The interpreter asked the question, and the tribal elder gave his reply.  The interpreter turned to the archeologist who waited with great anticipation.

"It's simple",  the interpreter said, relaying the elder's response.  "They didn't pay the green fees!"

Now Go Out and Enjoy a Game of Golf!!!

Course Update
  • As of last Saturday (6th June) the 4th hole is being played from the Red course tee box. This will remain the case for the rest of Winter.
  • Commencing 6th July, the "Monday Madness" competition will become a 9 hole event. The format will be identical to the "Nugget" competition. This is as a result of feedback received over the past few weeks.
  • The next stage of course improvement projects will commence shortly. A full re-vamp of the numerous paths on the course will be undertaken. The intention is to: improve cart access, better define the paths and improve the visual impact across the course. There will be some occasional disruption to holes, but this will be kept to a minimum. The entire project should be completed by the end of Winter.
  • An additional project will also commence shortly, to better secure the perimeter fencing that runs along the Links and Burradoo Roads. I'll be calling for the assistance of members in the form of some regular working bees to get the work completed. The fence runs for approximately 1.5km!! Stay tuned.

Loving the weekends at present. Not having to decide what to eat is such a luxury. I hope you all agree. Last weekend's Moussaka was outstanding.

Coming Events
  • The John Owens 4BBB team knockout has been re-scheduled and the signup sheet is available in the pro shop. There has been a change to the Conditions of Competition (can be viewed on the club website). Basically the matches are programmed onto the closing date for each round. So a team no longer has to contact their opposing team to arrange a date to play, they just have to turn up in time for their match. However, if teams wish to play their match on a different date (but before the due date), they may co-ordinate to achieve this. If a team is unable to play their match on the designated Sunday, and has been unable to re-schedule, then they will be considered to have forfeited.
  • The Club Championships in Mixed Foursomes (in conjunction with the Wotton Trophy for mixed handicap foursomes) has been scheduled for the 30th August. Due to the time constraints of covering a significant number of trophies in the remainder of the year, the event for 2020 will be held over 18 holes only. Amended Conditions of Competition will be published shortly. Start getting your partners primed!!
  • This Wednesday's event is an Ambrose with a difference. Each player is permitted to use only a maximum of 4 clubs during the round. The usual rules about swapping or borrowing clubs apply, i.e. You can't! Each player is required to provide 5 drives during the round. Some interesting conversations about which clubs to include. For example, do you all take a putter? Which wedge will you carry? etc etc. Remember, golf is for fun, so enjoy the different format.
  • Saturday 20th is the next trophy day. The H A Murdoch Trophy.

Wednesday 3rd June. Another beautiful Wintery day and 80 players in a good midweek field. The count back system was required for all prizes in this event, with 37 points as the benchmark. Tony Hobson (14) finished best to claim first, with Paul Pettiford (12) winning best 'A' grade, John Jones (18) best 'B' grade and David Scholes (25) best 'C' grade, with all these players scoring 37 points!  Balls were won down to 33 points on count back.
Picture

Friday 5th June. The "Nugget". Another strong field of 35 for this event, and further indication of the popularity of the format. Don Barker (23) posted 23 points to win from Alan Turpie (20) with 21 points. Balls were won down to 18 points on count back.

Picture
Saturday 6th June. The June Monthly Medal. A fantastic Winter day on the course and 98 players in the field. Scoring was exceptionally strong throughout the grades, and the low markers showed that you don't have to have a handicap at the high end of the grade to be able to win a medal. With a net score of 67, John Mulholland (8) picked up the medal from Daniel Weekes (9) on a count back. In 'B' grade, Peter Metcalf (19) scored a net 65 to win from David Stanley (23) with a net 66. The 'C' grade medal went to Shane Harvey (28) with his net 66 from Bob Young (25) who posted a net 67. John Mulholland's scratch score of 75 was the day's lowest, and balls were won down to net 73 on count back.

Sunday 7th June. After a foggy and cold start to the day 14 players contested the Sunday mixed competition. With a score of 38 points, Adam Bell (43) proved too strong for the rest, and won by a point from Luc Puchert (32). Balls were won down to 30 points via count back.

Monday 8th June. "Monday Madness". The Queen's Birthday long weekend concluded with today's event and 24 players joined up to play. David Spies (8) posted 40 points to win the day from Tom Dunlop (20) with 38 points. Balls were won down to 34 points via count back.
