Course Update
  • As the situation regarding the Covid outbreak over the Christmas period has now been brought under control, I will attempt to remove the Covid playing restrictions yet again. As of 01 February the playing conditions will return to 'pre-covid' standard. Rakes will be returned to the bunkers, (so they will return to 'play it as it lies'), the ball washers and fountains will be returned to use, the noodle collars will be removed from the flagsticks (allowing the flagstick to be removed if desired, please use your gloved hand), NTP and pro-pin competitions will return and you will mark your partner's card. Be reminded that physical separation requirements are still mandatory.
  • Another reminder about repairing divots and pitchmarks please.
Coming Events
  • The Australia Day Medley is on tomorrow. It will be a hot day, so please ensure to carry and consume plenty of fluids during the round. The event starts with a shotgun at 09:00 and concludes with a BBQ in the clubhouse. $25 covers the day. Novelty events are back in the mix, as is a 'Best dressed' award. Remember the event is a 4BBB and forms the competition for the Captain V Captain trophy.
  • The next trophy/medal day is the 6th February with the Monthly Medal. There will be a presentation following the completion of the competition.
  • The White Horse Cup gets underway next Sunday 31st with BGC hosting 8 other clubs from the region. We are represented by 2 teams again this year and we wish both teams the very best success.
  • February 20th is Jock Rossell day in conjunction with the Bill Chrystal Memorial Trophy (for Left handers). These events are PAR events, with the JR being a pairs event.
  • A reminder that the sign up sheet for the Arthur Brassey Knock out competition is now open and available in the pro shop. The closing date is the 24th February and the 1st round must be completed by the 28th February.

Saturday 23rd January. The first of the medal/trophy days for 2021. 90 players entered the competition and when the dust settled, a presentation was held in the clubhouse. It's been 10 months since the last presentation, and it was well attended. The Sefton Cullen Anniversary Cup for 2021 was won by John Buchanan (9) with a 4 under-par nett 65.

The Monthly medals were won by:
  • 'A' grade, John Buchanan (9) nett 65, from David Bickford (13) nett 66
  • 'B' grade, Andrew Bova (23) nett 66, from Tom Dunlop (23) nett 67
  • 'C' grade, Tony Dick (29) nett 65, from Chris Harvey (25) nett 67.
Visitors to the club from The Coast GC, Moss Vale GC and Wakehurst GC.
A reminder that un-presented medals/tumblers are held at the bar for collection, and there are now quite a few to be claimed.
Sunday 24th January. 13 players in a small but slowly growing field. Alex Debs (13, visitor from Moss Vale GC) posted 39 points to win the event from Luke Kalaizis (34) with 37 points.

Monday 25th January. Just 5 players in the 9 hole event. Angus Yuill (23) posted 22 points to claim the prize from James Nethersole (21) with 21 points. Balls down to 16 points.
The Rules Quiz
This popular event has returned and resulted in the usual 'Putt-off' in the members' lounge. 8 players vied for the prize, each having supplied the correct answers to the question posed in my blog last week. Nick Reinhard held his nerve to make a great putt and claim the prize.

The answers to the quiz question are as follows (go back to my last blog to read the question!):
There are a total of 4 options available to solve the unplayable lie issue.
  1. Return to the location of the previous shot and replay it, penalty 1 shot.
  2. Drop within the bunker and within 2 club lengths of the ball's position (no closer the hole), penalty 1 shot.
  3. Drop within the bunker along a line extended from the ball and the pin, penalty 1 shot, and
  4. Drop outside the bunker, along a line extended from the ball and the pin, penalty 2 shots.

Look out for the quiz question next week which will be 'in-play' for the presentation following the February monthly medal on the 6th.

My darling wife Denise may not play golf at all but she certainly appreciates the intricacies of golf course design with the birthday cake she provided for me last week.

  • The bunker renovations are now complete. There are a few minor items still to be seen to, however, the bunkers are now all back in play. Covid rules are still in place until such time that the rakes are brought back into use. My thanks to the greens' staff and all the volunteers over the three days of the project.

  • Another request for all players to please attend to the divots and pitchmarks across the course. It's everyones responsibility to fix the course as you play. Please feel free to gently remind your playing partners of their responsibilities. I'll make sure there is a plentiful supply of sand, so please don't skimp.

Here is the latest email from Tim. It seems that the Friday dinners have been greatly missed.

BOTH FRIDAY NIGHT DINNERS IN FEBRUARY ARE NOW SOLD OUT.  STAY TUNED FOR MARCH EVENTS
Good evening everyone,

This is the news that you have all been waiting to hear!  We are excited to announce that our very popular First Friday Dinners will be returning on Friday 5 February 2021!

3.  50 guests will be permitted in the Hordern Room with a maximum table size of 8 guests

THERE IS MORE!

Due to the reduced capacity there will also be a Third Friday Dinner on Friday 19 February 2021, with the same seating and service arrangements.

STILL MORE!

Back by popular demand, our Friday takeaway dinners will return on Friday 26 February 2021

Now the details:

The menu for the takeaway meals will be released at the start of the last week in February and orders will open then.

We hope to continue in subsequent months, so we will monitor and assess during February and advise at the earliest opportunity.

Coming Events
  • The sign up sheet for the Arthur Brassey Knockout competition is now available in the pro shop.
  • Saturday 23rd is the first medal round for 2021. The Sefton Cullen Anniversary Cup trophy will be contested in conjunction with the medal round. Some good news!!! There will be a presentation following the completion of the day's play. At this stage I plan to hold presentations following medal/trophy events each month until I feel that we can move towards more frequent presentations in the future. Don't forget to do your research for the 'Rules Quiz!'.
  • Australia Day Medley, Tuesday 26th January. This event includes the annual Captain V Captain trophy, so play well for your appropriate captain to hold the bragging rights. The Men currently hold the trophy. There will be a return to the novelty events as well and we are trialling using the NTP markers again. A small bottle of hand sanitiser has been fitted to the marker for players to use before entering the name on the sheet. The event is a 'Shotgun' start from 09:00 and there is a BBQ to follow which includes a chocolate paddle pop for dessert. More details are included in the flyers available on the main club noticeboard. Still a few slots available for sign-up, 2 men and 2 women per 4 ball.
  • Sunday 31st January will see BGC host a number of clubs from the highlands and the coast for round 1 of the 2021 White Horse Cup. There will be over 70 players from visiting clubs on the course. We have two teams entered in the competition and wish them the very best. The two teams held a 'Team building' competition down at Wollongong GC last Sunday to give the boys a chance to show the new 'Strip'. Team 2 narrowly accounted for Team 1 in a skins event.

The situation: 'A player has hit their ball into a bunker. On arrival at the bunker the player determines the ball to be "Unplayable". The questions: how many options are available to the player to deal with the unplayable lie, and how many strokes will each option cost??
Come to the presentation next Saturday and try your luck. The putter might be back in play!!

  • Today was day #1 of the bunker Refurbishment program. With 17 volunteers, the secretary/manager and 4 greens staff, a good team was available. At the end of the day 2 bunkers are ready to return to play and the others are ready to receive sand. The guys worked their butts off and a beer was a very welcome finish to the day.
Tomorrow the team (plus any additional members who wish to add their sweat) will complete the project. There are likely to be some clean up duties still to be completed, but it is hoped that most bunkers will be back in play for the Wednesday competition this week. So you better brush those cobwebs off your sand wedge!! You also might notice that the bunkers are shaped differently than they were. This is the first major bunker refurbishment in memory (or for at least 40 years), so they have been hit very hard.
  • Members might have noticed a new tab on the right hand side of the Captain's Blog page on the club website. This tab will show a table of current trophy holders (men only at this stage), and includes winners from 2019 as well. As a trophy is completed the winner's name will be added.

Course Update
  • As I write this blog, another heavy rainstorm has begun. This has been the pattern for many weeks now, and is likely to continue through until the end of Summer. The heavy storms have taken an enormous toll on all the bunkers across the course. They are at a stage where simply re-filling them with sand will not suffice and a re-furbishment program has been set in place. Members will receive an email shortly advising of two working bees which have been scheduled over the coming weeks. Monday 11th and Tuesday 12th.  Meet at the clubhouse terrace at 11:30 for job assignments. Refreshments will be provided following each working bee. It's likely that several more working bees will be required to complete the program. As a bunker is refurbished, it will be brought back into play. So, until that time, bunkers will continue to be GUR (not compulsory).
  • All members will be aware that the Covid protocols, which were scheduled for removal on 1st January, were kept in place due to the developing outbreak in Sydney and surrounding districts. We will continue to monitor the situation with a view towards removing the protocols as soon at it is deemed safe practice to do so. We are also looking at alternative techniques to achieve the required health safety protocols, and these will be trialled at the upcoming Medley event scheduled for Australia Day. More details soon.
Coming Events
  • Keep an eye out for the sign up sheet for the Arthur Brassey knockout. The sheet will be available in the pro shop next week. The Conditions of Competition for the event are located on side of the Captain's Blog page on the club website.
  • The January Monthly Medal is scheduled for the 23rd in conjunction with the Sefton Cullen Anniversary Cup.
  • The Australia Day Medley is scheduled for the 26th in conjunction with the annual Captain V Captain event. See the notice board for more details, should be a great day.
  • The White Horse Cup gets underway on Sunday 31st January with Bowral GC hosting teams from The Grange, Sussex Inlet, Moss Vale, Gerringong, Shoalhaven Heads, Kiama and the Highlands golf clubs. Our teams will face off against The Grange and Moss Vale in the first round.
