31/5/2017

The final of the J.W.Draper Foursomes Knockout was played today in cold blustery conditions between David Boyd and Pascal Timores against Terry Downing and Bruce Frankland. David and Pascal went to an early lead on the 1st, however, Terry and Pascal recovered to square it on the 2nd. The game continued this trend until David and Pascal jumped to a two hole lead on the 8th and 9th. After loosing the 10th, Terry and Bruce got it back on the 11th, with a further inroads into the lead, they won the 15th and squared all the other holes to be one down going down the 18th. Pascal held his nerve on the 18th with a 3 feet putt to square the hole and win the match, one up. It was a great, evenly matched game of golf played in great spirit with David and Pascale gracious in their win. David mentioned that the four finalists were all from the Number 2, White Horse Cup team. I am not sure if he was having a shot at the other team or not. The Draper Trophy is a glass and silver jug. Presentation of the trophy has been delayed until we can find a suitable day to get together and fill it with a fine wine for toasting around the fire. Congratulations to David and Pascale and commiserations to Terry and Bruce.

The Mixed Foursomes Scratch Championship has been played over the last two Sundays in ideal weather conditions. Leading the charge were Pam and Don Barker with a first round score of 99 followed by a magnificent 91 for a total of 190 to win the Championship. Runners up were the Captain and his wife Leonie, with a total of 192. Due to their playing category Chris Hill and Ian Lawrence were omitted from the presentation, however their combined scratch score of 175, 15 shots clear of the field, should not go unmentioned. A great effort without reward. It was a very close contest for the Handicapped Wotton Trophy  with the Captain and Leonie pipping Leah and David Boyd by a half point on a count back. Although the Captain made a "botch" of the event at the presentation on the previous Sunday, for which he apologized, the event concluded for 2017 on a positive note. Congratulations to all those who competed.

Commander in Chief leads by example.

Finally, the Bunker on the 7th is a bunker again.

The ground staff ably, led by Superintendent, Damian Gair and with the help of Dad's Army finally put the finishing touches on the bunker on the 7th fairway and filled it with sand. This project started in December last year when we had use of a small excavator. Unfortunately, after the initial assault on the bunker, we had Christmas / New year holidays, a staff member resigning leaving us with three,  normal annual leave and wet weather to just name a few of the delays. Anyway, it is now complete and members will be pleased to see the back of the front ledge, which was a constant source of annoyance to all members. The staff will attack other bunkers on the course as time and funds permit, however, we will not start them until we can complete the task within a two week time frame to avoid inconvenience to members.
