update - Incredible shot - Dr Who, Sausage Rolls, Vicars Shield & Internet problems.

29/2/2016

Incredible shot - Collusion - no way. Of course, under the rules,  it is not permitted to leave a ball in a position where it may assist another player if one wishes to  assist another player.(Rule 22). No intention here - professional players - money is the prize. Thank you, Geoffrey Hammond. kb

Sausage Rolls. In the past, when the kitchen is closed, there hasn't been a hot food offering for players returning to the clubhouse or for any other clubhouse patrons. Now these are available - the picture shows a serving of two sausage rolls, sliced up. Two of them could be more than enough for four people. There has been requests from members and visitors for many years for something like this. Now we have, let's support it and eat them.

The plan is that if it goes well, the offering could be expanded to something like small quiches. Later on it could be a few holes of golf on Sunday afternoon, a couple of small quiches, a drink in the clubhouse then home, with no need to cook dinner. Sounds a good idea? kb

Dr Who You may have wondered what the device in the photo is. At first glance it could be something from the long running BBC series Dr Who - actually it is a rain-gauge that records and transmits the amount of rainfall and the rate of rainfall. Every municipality has problems with stormwater - that is water coming from rainfall finding its way into the sewerage system and overloading it. The idea of these monitors is to find out the areas where the overload of the sewerage system by stormwater ingress, is coming from. This is done by recording flows in the sewerage system and at the same time co-relating those to rainfall. You may recall some years ago we had a similar device installed. It is down by the area of the practice chipping green. - kb

Vicars Shield .On Saturday we played the first round of the Vicars Shield. It is a two-round event and Grant Blanchard heads the field at present with 43 points. Chris Barry was the winner of the competition of the day - Chris is a new member who also recorded 43 points but won the day from Grant on a count back. Chris is a provisional member , so he was not eligible to compete for the Vicars Shield. Chris was telling me he had been absent from golf for 12 years, so he was very pleased with the result. - kb
The Internet. Recently the booking system has been unavailable from time to time. The reason for this is that the internet connection that the golf club has 'been down' ie not working. The Booking System needs to access the computer server in the office which contains members details as well as information about current bookings. The booking system accesses the computer via the internet so if the internet is not working at the golf club then the booking system doesn't work.
On the other hand the club's website is hosted on a server in the San Francisco area so even if the internet is not working at the golf club the club's website will still work.

We think the reason why the internet availability is sporadic is that there is lots of work going on at the moment to do with the installation and commissioning of the NBN. I have been told that the start of the commissioning of the NBN is imminent. Different areas in Bowral have different time tables so that schedule ifs for the golf club area. kb

Slideshow Awards night

24/2/2016

Awards Presentation Night was held a the club last Saturday night with 40 loyal members giving well deserved accolades to our Club Champions and Trophy Winners for 2015. The night was held in a semi formal atmosphere with some short and tall stories told to enhance the presentation. Special thanks must go my assistant Robert Eriksson and to all the staff who helped. It was a great night.

Illawarra Champion of Champions
I have been amiss in not reporting earlier on the results of the Champions of Champions A, B and C grade played by our club Champions on Sunday 20th December 2015. Our roving reporter, Alec Dietsch reports “ Unfortunately and unusually, it was not Alex Mulholland’s day in “A” Grade and although he fought hard, went down to luckier players on the day. Alec, in “B” Grade, also a strong fighter, finished 3rd beaten on a count back for second , but enjoyed the experience. Our Treasurer Warren Ryan, competed for the “C” grade glory and beat all competitors, to take away a magnificent trophy and bragging rights for the next 12 months. Well done to Alex, Alec and Warren for competing on a very hot Sunday afternoon at Highlands, proudly representing our club achieving outstanding results. pc

Australia Day
On Australia Day 62 players beat the weather and played in the Australia Day Team Stableford. There were plenty of flags, banners and tattoos to show loyalty to the day and although the going was heavy, the “cream rose to the top”. Ellen Neale, Susan Harrison, Dennis Neale and Garrie Harrison winning the day with a score of 88 points  (two best scores from 4 players) with runners up Frank Lapinskie, Dennis Cooper, Norm Dodds and Keith Markwell on 86 on a count back. After the event all joined at the club for a Lamb lunch. Presentations of Legs of Lamb to the winners were made by Women’s’ Captain, Barbara Clayton and everybody agreed, it was a most enjoyable day. pc

Chipping Practice Hole
Damian and the boys have extended the apron to the practice chipping hole to give a feel of chipping from the fairway. Are you aware 80% of your practice time should be devoted to chipping your ball from 60 meters and closer. Why ? If you can successfully chip the ball to land near the hole, to ensure a one putt green, you will shave 18 shots off your handicap in no time. Photo shows Garrie Harrison in the process of lowering his handicap. Members are reminded there is no chipping practice on regular greens, practice putting green or the croquet court. pc

David Simmers protecting the 14th green from the Corella's
All members would be aware of the damage to many of our greens, particularly the 14th, from the Corella's picking out the best parts for lunch. We don’t know whether they do this to get at the roots, bugs or in pure boredom, however, it is most destructive. Some years ago an air cannon was purchased by the club and currently it is in the capable hands of David Simmers. Firing up to 5 shots in the morning, certainly got the local members living on the fringe of the golf course and elderly residents of Bowral House up and away for the day, however, the Corellas would fly away and come back later. David now fires the cannon about 6.00pm just as they are roosting for the night. This has the effect of disturbing them from roosting and making them find another place to rest. They then tend to stay away for the day and leave us alone. David is very dedicated to the task and is on the Corellas radar list. Such is his success, he now has to camouflage his golf cart, so he can sneak up on the Corellas that are left and scare the daylights out of them. Thank you David, you are doing a great job without endangering any of our members or the fauna in general. pc

White Horse Cup
On Sunday 07/02/16, our first adventure this year, led to a disappointing loss for both teams. Bowral 1 went down to Jamberoo at our club and Bowral 11 went down to  Links Shell Cove at Jamberoo. Last Sunday however was a totally different story, with both teams achieving a resounding win. Bowral 1 beat Russell Vale at Worrigee 4 - 2 and Bowral 11 beat St Georges Basin at Gibralter 5-1. We are now on a roll and will keep you informed of results. Photo's will follow. pc

The bridge on the 15th - Centennial Restaurant

8/2/2016

Picture
The bridge over the hazard on the 15th
There is a water hazard on the 15th and in 2015 a wooden bridge was put over it so that players would not have to go through the hazard when it was wet and muddy. The stakes defining it as a water hazard have been placed along the hazard. The bridge is in the hazard in that it is not the subject of a local rule excluding or defining it not to be part of the hazard.  (The masonry bridges on the course are the subject of a local rule and have been excluded from being in their respective hazards click here for that link). So all that means is if your ball is in the hazard including that area of the bridge it must be played from there or relief taken under rule 26-1. Note that the bridge is an immovable obstruction and that the stakes marking the hazard are also  immovable obstructions, as defined by the local rules on the back of the card.
Here are a couple of pictures showing a couple of situations.

Picture
Here the ball is in the hazard and may be played from the hazard or relief taken under Rule 26-1 at a cost of 1 stroke.
Picture
Here the ball is outside the  hazard and lying on a path with an artificial surface of wood chips. Relief may be takes without penalty under Rule 24-2b

From the Rules - Section - Definitions

Obstructions An “obstruction’’ is anything artificial, including the artificial surfaces and sides of roads and paths and ...."

Wood chips when applied to a path are also an artificial surface as dealt in decision 24/9

Decision 24/9
Artificially-Surfaced Road or Path
Q.An artificially-surfaced road or path is an obstruction. What constitutes artificial surfacing?
A.A road or path to which any foreign material, e.g., concrete, tar, gravel, wood chips, etc. has been applied is artificially surfaced and thus an obstruction.

I hope that clears up issues to do with that bridge and other non masonry bridges  on the course.
Please use the bridge if in motorised cart.  KB

Just a reminder - Robin Murray is a member and the host at CENTENNIAL VINEYARDS RESTAURANT on Centennial Road. As a member benefit  one can present your Bowral Golf Club membership card to receive a free bottle of wine when having a la carte lunch (minimum 4 people) Click on the link here . to go to their website. Robin has been a member now for a few years and also advertises on the  18th tee. Incidentally he did his training as a chef at Gleneagles. In the picture Robin is with Warren Ryan, our treasurer, where we had Sunday lunch. Recommended.  Their telephone number is 4861 8701. It is good to support our sponsors.  KB
