Course Update
  • Players will by now have noticed the pathworks on several holes. This project continues (after the rain clears) with the next major location being the 16th and 3rd tees. The section beside the 16th tee has already been placed, and the remainder will be completed shortly. The intention is to have all players assemble at the rear of the 16th tee and then utilise the new path for access to the 16th fairway. There is a significant safety issue with players assembling below the 16th tee while players are playing the 15th hole.
  • The rain, which commenced on Sunday, has been considerable and the course is currently closed due to localised flooding. Please check the Club website for a daily 'Status' before heading in to play. It is likely that the course will be closed for most of the week, and the return of cart use will consequently be delayed.
  • Another reminder about repairing your divots Please!!!!

Wednesday 22nd July. A wonderful Mid-Winter day. 75 players in the field which saw Chris Kunz (16) score 38 points to win the event. Best in 'A' grade was Langdon Emery (15) with 37 points, 'B' grade Craig Houden (20) with 37 points and 'C' grade was Eugene O'Sullivan (25) also with 37 points. Balls were won down to 32 points via count back.

Friday 24th July. The "Nugget". A good field of 29 players enjoyed some fine conditions on the Yellow course. Andrew Bova (27) scored 21 points to win this event from Don Barker (22), Tony Wozniak (45) and Wendy Burke (25), all of whom scored 19 points. Balls were won down to 18 points via count back.

Saturday 25th July. The Boxmor Trophy.
Another beautiful Winter's day welcomed 93 players to the event. When the dust settled, the Captain's team had amassed 12.5 points to the President's 9.5 points to claim the trophy for 2020. In the 'Head-to-Head' contest, the President (paired with David Farthing) scored 44 points to beat the Captain (paired with John Buchanan) on 41 points. Thanks to everyone for showing their support to both teams. 2021 will see an entirely new (and exciting) format for this event.
The daily event (4BBB) was won by the team of Paul Pettiford (12) and Dennis Neale (23) with a score of 47 points from Nick Winstone (25) and Ray Furner (27) on 46 points. In the single event, Dennis Neale scored 39 points. Balls were won down to 41 points via count back.

An Interesting Story
Chris Kunz
achieved his first ever Bowral competition win in Wednesday’s Stableford, after only 148 rounds and 20 months of membership.

Making it more remarkable were the facts that he hit off in the first group at 7:50am, playing through the frost; putted with a golf glove on his left hand to speed up play; and, completed the round still hitting the same PRO V1 golf ball he had used for 322 consecutive holes! That is 17 rounds and 16 holes, with 1,614 consecutive hits of the same ball… and hopefully more to come!
Understandably, after so many holes and hits the Bega Cheese logo on the number 4 Titleist PRO V1 has all but disappeared. Here it is with a new sibling:

Picture
As a postscript to this story, Chris deposited his 'Trusty Titleist PRO V1' into the dam on the 15th hole the  following Saturday. In all the ball survived 1681 consecutive shots over 336 holes. (I wonder if anyone else has kept the same ball for this duration???) My thanks to Chris for providing this story for the blog.

The Brain Teaser

  • The Pathwork is continuing over the next few weeks. In the last couple of days the boys have extended the path heading to the 1st fairway, the path leading to the 5th fairway and the path from the 12th green to the triple tee. These paths are still to be rolled (see photos). Also almost completed is the access way beside the cart sheds. There is now an area available for washing down the carts after use. The next major work will be to the path beside the 3rd tee.
  • Thanks to Pat Donoghue for all his work in filling divots and bird damage across the course over the past months. Divots remain an issue at our club. It's a player's responsibility to repair their own divots. Also it's a kindness to other players to repair any other divots you come across. Thank you for your diligence.
  • Breaking News. The club has received a requirement that we exclude members or guests from entering or utilising the club in any way if they have visited Victoria in the past 14 days. If you fall into this category please don't come to the club until you have isolated for 14 days. Contact the office for more details.

  • Saturday 25th July is the annual President V Captain competition for the Boxmor Trophy. Players need to ensure they are booked as a Foursome. Advise the pro shop of the team you want to represent (if you wish to be included ) and your 4 ball score will be compared at random to a pair from the opposing team. Each result will be worth 1 point to either the President or the Captain (or halved if appropriate). The team with the highest score wins the Boxmor for 2020 (and bragging rights!!!). There will be a single stableford competition in conjunction, however the team event is the event of the day, and the usual team provisions (like giving advice etc) apply.
  • Thursday 30th July is the AGM. Commencing at 6pm in the clubhouse. There are only limited slots still available, contact the office to book if you wish to attend.
  • Saturday 1st August is the next Monthly Medal and the John McMaster Medal will be held in conjunction.
  • Sunday 2nd August is the 1/4 final round of the John Owens Trophy. If your match has not been completed beforehand, it will be played in the time slot allocated on the 2nd. The booking is under the match number.
  • Tuesday 11th August is a Titleist fitting day. If you wish to attend for a fitting, contact the pro shop to for a time slot.

(Just remember that when you are considering which team to nominate for in the Boxmor next Saturday). John Hopkins (22) fired up and posted a net 68 to beat Tony Fitzpatrick on a count back. • My announcement in uppercase lettering last week has shown some traction. There was a small improvement in the DIVOT situation. However, I am still seeing far too many players not carrying a sand bucket (????), and many others not fixing their divot after play (???). If you see someone take a shot and not fix their divot, you have my permission to give them a rip.
  • The news is currently full of Covid 2nd-wave bulletins. We are very conscious of keeping up to date with the situation in NSW and our local region. The protocols which are currently in place at BGC will remain in place until such time that the virus is no longer an impending issue. Please remain vigilant, use the already established hygiene regimens and keep up the 1.5m physical separation standard. Complacency is one of our greatest flaws.
  • All active players will have seen the progress of phase 1 of the Paths Project. The paths were being rolled today, and phase 1 should now be complete. See the photos below for a progress update.  The next phase will commence in late July or early August.

Wednesday 8th July. A single stableford event with 64 entrants. (This is the first Wednesday where the 70 player threshold has not been met to trigger the extra prize payouts.) Stephen Heywood (41) posted 41 points to win the event from Kevin Burke (28) with 39 points via count back. Balls were won down to 32 points. An interesting note, the 10th hole (PAR 5) was reduced to just over 300m and as a result only 9 birdies were registered. Was the temptation to 'drive the green' too great for many? Amazing how your head plays with your game.
Picture

Friday 10th July. The "Nugget". Another solid field size of 36 players (22M/14L) entered the contest and when the dust settled it was Chris Chiu (32) with 24 points in first place. Don Barker (20) scored 21 points to beat Alan Turpie (20) on a count back for 2nd place and Stephen Heywood (41) posted 20 points to claim 4th via a count back. Balls went down to 19 points via count back.

Saturday 11th July. A field of 86 (smallest for some time, and also less than the trigger for extra prize payouts) contested a single stableford event in mostly fine conditions (except for the storm which caught the last few groups). David Bickford (15) scored a fine 43 points to win by 2 strokes from Warren Ryan (23) on 41. Balls were won down to 35 points. Of note was the high scoring, with nearly 25% of the field scoring 36 points or better.

Sunday 12th July. Another small field of only 5 players. Scott Olding (16) scored 33 points to win the day's event.

Congratulations to Robert Eriksson for providing the correct response to the recent teaser. He correctly determined that Tom had 7 balls while Bill had 5. Robert also correctly identified that silhouette 'B' was the correct answer to the previous teaser.
See the photo below for the new teaser. Remember the 4th correct responder will claim the prize. Send your guess to bgcclubcaptain@gmail.com

  • DIVOTS! DIVOTS! and more DIVOTS!!! One of our members suggested me using UPPERCASE to see if that gets the message across any better. Please carry and use a sand bucket for all rounds (including practice rounds). If you are driving a cart, carry your sand bucket and your club to the ball each time. If you come across an unrepaired divot, FIX IT PLEASE!
  • The Paths' Project commenced this morning and as a result the tee locations for the 10th and 12th holes have been moved well forward. They will be located on the mowed fairways for the Tuesday and Wednesday Competitions. Since this reduces the overall length of the course, scores will not be forwarded to Golflink for either of these daily competitions. See the photos below.
