St Andrew's Day is on the 30th November. St Andrew is the Patron Saint of Scotland so it is a special day for the Scots. At our club we have many with scottish heritage and because of that the day is recognised with a tournament - the St Andrew's Day Trophy. It has been a tradition at the club that 4 bottles of whisky, donated by 4 of the club's Scots, are given to the most successful team on the day provided they are in the clubhouse during the presentation - if not then the prize is given to those highest in the order. This year it was Jim Phillips, David McGinnes, Tony Fitzpatrick and Taffy McCarten who were there to collect the prize. We were fortunate in having, as special presenters, Helen Dalgleish (on the left in the photo) and Jean Laburn - both from Scotland and house guests of Ian and Maggie McKenzie. They are on a trip to Australia and NZ leaving again for the UK on Monday. Helen Dalgleish is a school friend of Maggie’s and is a member of the 125 year old King James VIth club in Perth, aka the Island Club because it’s on an island in the River Tay actually in Perth, Scotland, only accessible at very low tides, otherwise you have to climb up over a railway bridge!! She has been the Lady Captain, club champion and is a Life member. Jean Laburn was the Lady Captain of Blairgowrie Golf Club, N of Perth—a very prestigious club which has hosted many big tournaments, not the least of which was the Junior Ryder Cup held last year when the actual Ryder Cup was held at Gleneagles. Thank you to Ian for the words and info and to both Ian and Maggie for bringing Helen and Jean to the club. kb
After 12 holes of golf in 35 degree temperatures, a hamburger BBQ, a members draw for $550.00 (which was not won) a visitors draw for a bottle of wine, 21 enthusiastic members used the cool of the evening to enter a putting competition. With an entry fee of $2.00, each member tried their hand at an 8 metre putt, not successfully though. The starting point was moved forward and we tried again, again not successfully. The starting point was moved forward again and Wendy Burke was the ultimate winner from about 4 metres. She won the $42.00, buckled under pressure from her husband and put it on the bar. What a wonderful lady and a worthy winner. PC
