Club Championships Draw
The second round of the club championship qualifying was played on Saturday. The lowest gross scores over two rounds was selected to be in the draw. Three players, Keith Markwell, David Boyd and John Cummins elected to compete in A Grade.  The draw from the qualifiers is done following the R&A recommendations. Where there are 8 Qualifiers - upper half - 1 v 8 & 4 v 5 - lower half - 2 v 7 & 3 v 6. The rounds must be played by the dates contained in the conditions of competition. To avoid the chance of disqualification please play your match as soon as you can. Condition 10 from the Conditions of Competition states:-

"Except in exceptional circumstances, no extension beyond the closing date of each round will be permitted. The course not being open for carts is not an exceptional circumstance. Matches played before the Sunday for quarter and semi finals must be with agreement from both players. If the round is not played and completed by the due date the contestants will be disqualified. In the case of only one player on the tee at the designated time for any finals match then the match will be awarded to that player. Contestants are advised to
play their ties as soon as possible to avoid complications in organising and completing a match by the due date."

Congratulations to all the qualifiers and good luck in your matches. When preparing the draw much needs to be prepared and checked, vetted and then re-visited. My thanks to Frank Eggert and Darryl.

Qantas Golf Club

Qantas Frequent Flyer is launching the Qantas Golf Club this summer. Bowral Golf Club has been accepted as a participating golf club  for this new venture. What that means is that Qantas Golf club members will be able to book on line through the Qantas Golf Club web site to play at our club. The scheme has been endorsed and supported by Golf Australia and Greg Norman also is endorsing this scheme. Players can earn Frequent Flyer points when playing golf. Qantas also plans to have special Qantas Golf tournaments and will have golf travel packages available. There are two levels of membership - premium members will have their handicaps maintained by the club. For us, at Bowral Golf Club, it is an opportunity to bring visitors to the club and showcase our facilities.

Many thanks to Dad's Army for the excellent job they did of weeding the 11th tee.

The Veterans Trophy  was played in conjunction with the qualifying rounds of the Club Championships. This competition is for the best nett score over two rounds for those players over 65 who are entitled to enter the competition.

The  Winner:   John Cummins 136
Runner Up:      Alec Dietsch 141

The Course Presentation Policy. As mentioned last week the Match & Greens Committee were to review having a first cut of rough on the fairways. The M&G committee discussed this at length with the pros and cons being considered in detail and passed their recommendation to the Board. The Board ratified that we will cease to have a first cut of rough as part of the course presentation policy. Many courses have a first cut of rough and some have second and third. Watching the PGA tour on the golf courses in the US, most seem to have this. Other courses seen, don't. These seems to go in line with the type of course it is. Local courses, Moss Vale and Mt Broughton, don't have a first cut. Barwon Heads, where a group of us play each year, also doesn't have it. Famous courses in the UK, such as St Andrews, Carnoustie, Troon, Turnberry, Royal Dornoch don't. I suppose, also it is not like our rough is very long, in fact it is cut at a height of just under 2 inches. Each course has its own characteristics and this gives it its individuality.

We completed the first round of the Championship qualifying in conjunction with the October Monthly Medal on Saturday. There were some fantastic scores in, including 4 x 64 netts in B grade. They were  Ken Dobie, Norm Dodds, John Cummins and Ashley Southon.  The second round is next Saturday and the qualifiers for each grade will be determined from their gross aggregate scores in both rounds. Unlike our Monthly Medal A grade goes from 0-12, B- 13 to 19 and C 20 and above. The eight lowest qualifiers will be drawn to compete in a knockout. The grade that they are drawn in, depends on their handicap when they play next Saturday. If a player qualifies for more than one grade, e.g. if a B graders nett aggregate score was better than the first eight A graders, then he can elect to play in A grade (and A grade alone) provided he tells the Captain prior to the presentation next Saturday.

Conditions on the course are marvellous. Speaking to guest golfers, they were all full of praise for the team we have maintaining the course. Damian and Matt are our two green keepers on staff and we have the assistance of Nathan for two days a week. I think everyone agrees, what a fabulous job they do. As mentioned in a previous blog, we have refurbished our backup surrounds and fairway mowers so that they are in the same condition as our front line machines. This allows the fairways and surrounds to be prepared quicker than has been the case in the past. As a consequence of this, however, the backup surrounds mower which was previously used to do the first cut, i.e. the first cut of rough, now is no longer available to do this. A trial has been done using one of the zero turns to do this job but the result of this trial was not satisfactory – scalping and not doing a clean cut were two of the observations. The overall observation about using a zero turn for the first cut was that the result was “horrible”. This observation was from our course supervisor Damian and I would support every call that Damian makes about the standard of the golf course. So this leaves us with a bit of a conundrum – the better preparation of the fairways and surrounds comes at a cost, if we maintain the status quo of no first cut. Alternatives are to try and purchase a high hours machine that can be used for the first cut or to accept a lesser standard on our fairways and use one of the backup mowers for the first cut. One has a dollar disadvantage and the other a presentation disadvantage. Here I have tried to put the pluses and minuses of the first cut objectively and I know that some members prefer the first cut but being cognisant of all of the issues surrounding it, it may deserve a second “think”. In any case all members want the best for the club and we will be discussing this subject at the Match & Greens this coming Tuesday.

Georges River
Social Golf Club

Guest player numbers to our course are increasing. This time of the year we normally see an increase but we are noticing that we have more on the course and more in the clubhouse. One group I was talking to today, have been coming here for 7 or 8 years and have booked their two dates for 2017 – you can see their photograph to the right – a very pleasant group of gentlemen. They are a social golf club called the Georges River Social Golf Club.

Returning Cards. Under the Rules of Golf a player is responsible for signing and returning their card. Now we have two points of return – one is at the screen by the locker rooms and the other is in the Pro shop. Players are responsible for entering their results themselves and depositing the card where indicated. The old card return box has been retired and a new slot with a sign indicating where to deposit the cards is at the screen by the locker rooms. The Pro shop is not responsible for entering the scores into the computer – this is the responsibility of the players. The Pro shop may collect the final group’s cards when they finish on the 18th in order to expedite the finalizing of the competition. Once these cards have been entered the competition results will be finalized. What that means is that the second last group and those groups preceding it, must have their cards entered by that time. Some delays have occurred in the past by players entering their cards after returning their clubs to their car etc. This delays the whole competition and is unfair on those players who are waiting back for the competition results. This hardly ever happens, but it is worth a mention. The Pro shop preparing the competition results now is working very smoothly – we have been doing this for many, many months now and for me, a personal advantage so I can socialise while the results are being prepared.

Captain versus Captain event was held on the holiday Monday with a field of 51 players. The events format is a single stableford played in a four ball. Last year the men were successful but this year the new Lady Captain - Jill Scott, headed her team to a victory with 656 points to the mens 616 points.  Because there are different numbers of men and women playing in the event the aggregate score is calculated on an equal number of players from each side. In Monday's event there were 22 men and 29 women so the best 22 women's scores were taken for their total.
The best men's score was Terry Downing - runner up Bruce Windybank. The best ladies score was new ladies President Carol Turpie - runner up Trish Boyd.

Ball winners
Brian Hanrahan 37, Brian Lamb 35, Keith Markwell 34
Antonia Clarke 33, Jenny Ogg 31, Jan Ferguson 33, Annelise King 33, Peter Keys 32, David Boyd 32, Brian Dawkins 32, Alan Turpie 32, Judy Windybank 31.

Ball credits go directly to the mens accounts. Ladies Ball prizes are to be handed out by Jill.

The timing of the event this year was ideal as witnessed by the good field. We are starting to prepare next years event schedule now so we'll try and pick a date around the same time next year.
