Spring weather...storms and more

24/10/2021

 COVID Update
Golf NSW advises that the COVID local rules are still in place.  In addition, the use of ball washers and bubblers on the course are still restricted. Golf NSW has an informative FAQ site: click here to get the information. At this stage the advice is that these measures will be in place till the 1st of December, any changes we'll let you know. See the local rules summary on the adjacent photo. Click to enlarge. Remember to take enough water on the course as the weather warms up.

Course Care...

With the spring growth underway the course is looking great.  The greens and fairways renovations with the help from Mother Nature are coming along perfectly.  Now it is up to use to ensure we keep the good work going.  Repair you divots and also your pitch marks on the green. See the photo supplied by a member regarding "course care"... I don't think they did the cross stitch but I maybe wrong.
Picture
The drainage work on the 8th and 9th holes is a significant part of an overall plan to ensure the course will drain as quickly as possible with the weather events, especially the "East Coast Lows" which can deposit 100 mm plus in a couple of days.  Further drainage work and cart path installation are planned in the near future... all aimed at keeping the course open as much as possible and having carts available to members whenever the course is open.  The photo below shows the areas next to the 8th green coming back nicely with the growing season.  The adjacent photo highlights the challenge we have in managing  storms such as the one on Saturday late afternoon.

Tim sent out an email recently outlining the upcoming events for the Club House.
Thanks to members' suggestions the "Nine and Dine" in association with the Friday Nugget competition has been kick off. See details by clicking on the photo.
Melbourne Cup day is coming up, the golf event will be a Single Medley Stableford.
Presentation Night -
due to the COVID rules limiting the numbers we can have for a dinner and after planning out the numbers who will be wanting to come, unfortunately we will need to postpone this night till early February 2022.
It's best to move it rather than leave a significant number of members out in the cold.

Watson Cup
This trophy stroke event is held over three Saturdays with the best aggregate nett score determines the winner. So consistence is the aim (as always!!).  With three solid rounds with nett results in the 60's (66, 65 and 68) the winner was James Pinkstone with a total of 199.
The runner up on a count back with 208 was    Nick Reinhard; followed by Tom Madigan (208); John Hopkins (209) and David Ferguson (212).
Wednesday - Single Stableford
77 entrants on a wild and wet day, the winner with 40 points was Paul Barnes and runner up on 37 points James Nethersole.
Picture
Friday - Nugget Nine
On a very wet course, Andrew Bova won with 24 points with Eugene O'Sullivan  with 19 points.  A smaller field than usual with 13 golfers, due to the course conditions.
Saturday - Stroke
With carts available to members only, 78 players competed in the final round of the Watson Cup. In the daily event Paul Barnes (hcp 11) had a nett 64, a very good round.  Runner up was Craig Houden with a nett 65.

Sunday  - Medley Stableford
Bill Hayden son with 37 points from Kevin Barry (Gibraltar GC) with 36 points.

Monday - Medley Stableford
Jacob Nicholls won with 39 points.
Reminder - the temporary local rule of GUR on the 8th and 9th hole is still in place.  So if you end up being in an area where there is wheel ruts and obvious drainage works, take a free drop.

Play well,

Dave Burgess

COVID-19 update
With the Club House now open under the NSW Health guidelines we are back to enjoying some level of socialisation.  Please remember to bring your face mask and wear it in the club house when you're not eating or drinking. Also, the QR code registration is still required.  Finally, remember to have your proof of double vaccination on you.  Enjoy...

It's all happening with the qualifying rounds and other trophy events.

J W Draper Final
Last Wednesday the final of this handicapped match play event was finally played, some months later than planned.  As expected with this format, it came down to the wire and John McGuire and Pat Donoghue won "one up" over Alec Dietsch and Jim Larkin.
Picture
Lowest Round...
Last Saturday the contemporary lowest round was set by David Ferguson with a gross 68/nett 68 round. Great result sealed with birdies on the 16th and 18th holes.

Winter Eclectic
The winner this season was John Buchanan followed closely by the runner up Paul Carroll.  Paul just missed the birdie on the 8th hole which would have got him across the line. Summer Eclectic sign up sheet is in the Club House opposite the score card scanner, sign up, be in it to win it!!!!

Lifestyle Cup Result
This years cup was the best nett result over the two Saturday stroke rounds. It was a close event and I'm pleased to report that Graham Oldfield won after a winning second round with a nett result of 145.  Runner up on a count back was Greg Segal.

Veterans Plate Result
The Index of Trophies, Events and Awards is a rather lager document and it refers to this event as one to keep the older players engaged... with the size of the field it certainly is doing that.
The results were very close this year, John Hopkins with two nett 67 rounds won the event closely followed by David McGinnes as runner up.

Watson Cup
This trophy event is over three rounds, the recent two Saturday qualifying rounds and next Saturday.  It is a Nett Stoke event with James Pinkstone currently in the lead with a "pack" of players close behind.

Wednesday Cock of the Walk 4BBB.
John Russell and Piero Dal Bianco won the day with 45 points on a count back from Tony Rourke and John Mellen.
Picture
Friday Nugget Nine
Another good field with 49 competitors.
With a great 27 points Meeghan Bourne won with Andrew Bova runner up with 25.
Saturday Stroke Round
With a great Nett score of 63 Kevin Bourke was a clear winner.  Runner up was Neil Landry with a Nett 65 on a count back.
A-Grade - James Pinkstone 65
B-Grade - Neil Landry 65 on a count back
C-Grade - Ian McKenzie 69

Sunday Medley Stableford
Jet Ostrer won with 39 on a count back from Emma Fernandez.

Club Championships...

The draws for the three are nearly finalised and will be posted on the Club House notice board. The schedule is as follows:
  • Quarter Finals to be played by the 24th of October
  • Semi Finals by the 31st of October
  • The finals on the Sunday 7th of November.
This year we will have the 2021 Presentation Night on November 13th following the result of the Championships. COVID regulations will limit number unfortunately.

Course Update...

Spring is with us with some variable weather conditions, some warmth and then back to winter conditions.  However, we are getting more run on the course and the greens are firm.  For the "big hitters" the burn on the 8th is coming into play from the tee. The upside is you can play out of the hazard... see below. I think it resulted in a par...

Club Championships - Qualification
This Saturday when you pay your green fees can you indicate to Darryl if you are NOT wanting to be in the running to qualify for the Club Championships.  This will eliminate a significant amount of follow up to finalise the draws.  Thank you.

2021 Presentation Night
As previously noted, this year we have a Presentation night for trophy and championship winners. It's on Saturday night, November 13th.  All are welcome.

There is still time to sign up, entires close the end of the month.  Thanks to Alec for getting this comp up and running.
