Course Update.
  • The recent (and continuing) cold and wet weather has resulted in the introduction of 'Preferred Lies' through the General Area of the course. This allows players the option of placing their ball within 30cm of its actual position. Note, the General Area does not include bunkers, penalty areas or greens. The ball may be cleaned in the process. Players should also check before play as to whether carts are permitted on the course. Also as a temporary measure, (due to water buildup) bunkers may be GUR, check with the Pro shop before play.
  • Keen eyed players may have noticed some white spray painted lines at different areas of the course. The Board has just recently approved a major path renovation project across the course. It is hoped that all the paths will be completed during the Winter months. On occasions some short delays might be experienced due to construction work. This disruption will be kept to an absolute minimum.
  • In addition to the path works, the boundary fence along Links and Burradoo Roads, will be improved to assist in maintaining the private nature of the property. A recent email was sent to members advising of the situation, and the corresponding issues we are experiencing with non-members accessing the course.
  • The extensions to the cart storage shed have now been completed (see photos below), and this has meant a very welcome increase in the available space.
  • The competition currently being run on Mondays in May (known as the Monday Madness) will be continued until further notice. The competition is played over the White course and the set up is the same as the Sunday competition.
  • Clubhouse Re-opening Programme. I know everyone is anxious to know when the clubhouse will re-open. The NSW State Government recently announced details about a 50 person limit for club and restaurant venues. The BGC team is currently assessing the requirements included with this announcement, (there are a great number, believe me), which have been determined by Clubs NSW. We expect to be able to make an announcement in the next few days.
  • Reminder!! All the CoVid-19 protocols which have been introduced at BGC remain in force. Social distancing is still a requirement!

Wednesday 20th May. Another excellent field for our mid-week event, with 91 players joining the fray. As the number again exceeded the threshold of 70, the additional grade prizes were awarded. Grant Blanchard (26) scored 41 points to take the major prize, while in 'A' grade, Darryl Purchase (0) scored a fine 2 under par to post 38 points,  in 'B' grade Andrew Tartu (16) scored 37 points and in 'C' grade Chris Harvey (26) rounded out the runners-up prizes with 37 points on a count back. Balls were awarded down to 33 points on count back.

Friday 22nd May. The "Nugget". Certainly a day for the most hardy of golfers. Cold, windy and wet!! (with snow falling the previous evening!). 6 players ventured onto the course and John Buchanan (16) with 20 points led them home. Grant Blanchard (26) with 18 points was awarded the runner-up prize and the remaining 4 players were each awarded a ball for their effort!

Saturday 23rd May. Considering the inclement weather over the previous few days, and the actual weather on the day, the field of 60 was an excellent turnout. Scoring 35 points on a count back, Tom Whitmarsh (21) pipped Wayne Roberts (11) for the major prize. Balls were won down to 31 points on count back.

Sunday 24th May. Again a good field for the Sunday mixed competition. 25 men and 2 women challenged the Red course with David Spies (7) emerging with the best score. Ingrid Jensen (50) with 36 points won the runners-up prize on a count back. Balls were won down to 31 points on count back.

Course Update
  • As all members are now aware, the club has returned to playing in 3s during competitions on Tuesdays/Wednesdays/Thursdays and Saturdays. Play in 4s is allowed on all other days, and in non-competition play on the days noted in the previous sentence. The reason we cannot move to play in 4s on the listed competition days is due to the limitation of a maximum of 10 people in an outside gathering. This limitation would be tested due to the current size of the fields on those days.
  • Members may now invite guests to join them in the member's own group up to the limit of the available slot (i.e. The member may invite 2 guests to fill a 3-player slot, or 3 guests to fill a 4-player slot). The member must be in the group, and is responsible for their guests compliance with the established CoVid-19 protocols.
  • The recent announcements regarding the slight relaxing of the maximum numbers allowed in a gathering, has not provided sufficient economics to justify opening the Clubhouse just yet. Clubs are not yet permitted to open as a bar only (food must be consumed in order to partake of alcohol service, maximum of 10 patrons at any time). As soon as we are able to re-open, we will do so. The team is constantly monitoring the situation in order to make the club facilities available as soon as possible. This also means that our food and coffee service remains 'Takeaway Only', and cannot be consumed whilst in the vicinity of the clubhouse.
  • The course is starting to soften underfoot, and we will shortly be moving to Winter conditions. To this end, could members who utilise carts for play please avoid driving into areas of known soft surfaces. I'm sure that being members you are all aware of the location of these sensitive areas.
  • The 4th fairway continues to 'grow-in'. See the photo for the latest update. I've added some photos from just over 5 months ago to remind members of how things have changed over that timeframe. Quite a reminder!!
The Menu
Another culinary success over the weekend. The fabulous food keeps on coming!!
The menu for this next weekend is re-produced below. Unfortunately, by the time you read this blog, the orders will have closed, so perhaps this is just a tease for those who may have missed out.
The menu is:

2 course Meal ($25 per person)
Main:
Confit duck with caramelised orange vinegar, mash and green beans
Dessert
Jaffa Cake

Soup  ($10 per person)
Winter Vegetable Soup

Saturday 16th May. A trophy event, something of a rarity at present. The J M Stanford Trophy. Again another large field of 99 turned out on another beautiful day after some overnight drizzle. The Captain, Dick Hiser (13) with 40 points emerged with the trophy. The grade runners-up winners were 'A' Mathew Helm (15) 39 points on count back, 'B' Ross Jauncey (21) 37 points on count back and 'C' Bob Constable (25) with 37 points on count back. Balls were won down to 34 points on count back.

Sunday 17th May. 20 players in the field, 19 Men and 1 lady. Steven Burlace (26) with 42 points beat the up and coming junior Lachlan Malcolm (27) on a count back to win the competition. Balls were won down to 36 points on count back. Keep your eye on Lachlan, as he is only 15 and is just finding his game, he is showing great promise!

Monday 18th May. "Monday Madness", 8 players into the fray on a very changeable day, 6 men and 2 ladies. Wilma Lung (42) winning the day with 38 points from John Ferguson (14) with 37.

Life is Like a Round of Golf
Author: Criswell Freeman

Life is like  round of golf
With many a turn and twist.
But the game is much too sweet and short
To curse the shots you've missed.

Sometimes you'll hit it straight and far
Sometimes the putts roll true.
But each round has it's errant shots
And troubles to play through.

So always swing with courage
No matter what the lie.
And never let the hazards
Destroy the joy inside.

And keep a song within your heart
Give thanks that you can play.
For the round is much too short and sweet
To let it slip away.

Now Go Out and Enjoy a Game of Golf !!!

Thank You to all the Mums

Course Update
  • Thank you to all the players for doing a better job of repairing the divots across the course. A definite improvement noted. Please keep up the effort and help create the best possible surface for play.
  • The 4th fairway extension is looking better every week. See the photos for an update. We will shortly move from the temporary tee to the Red course tee box, so the hole will start to play a little more like the index. Stay tuned.
  • Thanks To our 'Painter', John McGuire, for continuing his course coverage by painting the wall on the dam at the 2nd. I hope everyone is enjoying the fantastic colour display across the course with this beautiful Autumn weather. Thankfully, due to the watering efforts of our staff and volunteers over the intense drought, we lost very few of our specimen trees and can now enjoy the true ambiance of our course.
  • In Breaking News, the following email has just been received from Golf NSW.
Dear Member Clubs and Districts,

Golf NSW can advise that the NSW Office of Sport and NSW State Government are continuing efforts to finalise guidelines for recreation, exercise, and sport.  Many sports will be included in these guidelines and will recommence in the near future.

These guidelines will also form the basis for amendments to the current NSW Public Health Order in relation to COVID-19.

Whilst confirmation of the guidelines is not expected until Wednesday, May 13, golf Clubs should anticipate the playing of golf in groups of four from Friday, May 15, with outdoor gathering numbers not exceeding 10 persons.

Clubs should also maintain all current practices and measures in regard to social distancing and good hygiene.

Yours sincerely,
Stuart Fraser
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

As a result we are pleased to advise that, commencing Saturday May 16th, play will revert to our usual 3 person slots. This will permit a maximum of 3 groups to be in the vicinity of the 1st tee at any one time and still retain the requirements of the maximum of 10 persons in one vicinity. Social Distancing requirements remain in place.  The booking sheets will be available to book in 3's from this evening (Monday).

Wednesday 6th May, a mild Autumn day saw 84 players in the field to contest a two person Ambrose event played on the Red course. This was the first event for the men which has been played on this course, and there were some very low scores. The father and son pairing of John and Sam Mulholland (4 3/4) showed the field a clean pair of cleats by scoring a scratch 60 to net a score of 55 1/4. In second was the pairing of our club professional Kevin Kenny and his playing partner George Buschman (11) with a net 58. Balls were won down to a score of 65 1/4 on count back.
Picture
Friday 8th May, The "Nugget". Another good field in this popular event with 48 players in the contest (18 ladies, 30 men). Robert Eriksson (24) with 24 points won on a count back from David Simmers (24). Balls were won down to 18 points on count back.

Picture
Saturday 9th May, Another excellent field on a very changeable day. The late afternoon players getting a little damp when the storm arrived. However the rainbow show was quite spectacular!! With his score of 42 points, David Burgess (14) outclassed the field of 99 players to claim the major prize. The runner's up prizes in each grade went to 'A' grade, John Mellen (13) 39, 'B' grade John Ferguson (16) 40 and 'C' grade Nik Potter (24) with 40 points on a count back. Balls were won down to 34 points on count back.

Sunday 10th May, A very cold and windy day held off the some of the regular players, but the field of 15 (12 men, 3 ladies) showed some some real fortitude to brave the wintery conditions. Lachlan Malcolm (27) posted a fine 39 points to win from Brian Hanrahan (15) with 33. Balls were won down to 35 points. Lachlan is one of our up and coming junior players and at the age of 15 is showing he will be a player to watch going forward. His brother Angus was also in the field and scored 35 points. We have a growing number in the junior category, and hopefully will be able to resurrect the Bradford Trophy later in the year. It was last played for in 2005!!

Monday 11th May, "Monday Madness" on the White course. 11 Players enjoyed a beautiful Autumn Monday competition with Ash Southon (15) finishing with 42 points to win the day from Robert Bearup (17) with 37 points. Balls were won down to 34 points on count back. This competition is currently available for Mondays in May only, however this will be re-assessed shortly to see if we will continue the competition into June. Stay tuned.

  • 4th Fairway Extensions are physically complete, and as can be seen in the photographs, the grass is starting to appear. This will be a very welcome improvement to the course when it is re-opened. The area in concern is marked as "Compulsory GUR".
  • Also completed during the past week is the repair to the defect beside the 3rd green. This area is also marked "Compulsory GUR". (see photo)
  • A reminder that the protocols which were introduced to cater for the restrictions brought about by the Coronavirus are still in place. They are available on past issues of the blog and on the club noticeboard and in the pro shop.
  • Divots!!!! There was always the comment that "it's the visitors who are not repairing their divots". Well, we have not been accepting visitors for several weeks, and the situation of un-repaired divots is still a major issue. I implore all players to please fix their divots after playing the shot (and the practice divots as well!). There is a plentiful supply of sand, so there is no excuse. When filling the hole with sand, please fill to the level of the surrounding soil only, if you leave the sand in a pile, it can add unwanted wear to the blades of the mowers. As you walk down the fairway, if you see a divot which has not been filled, please fill it. 'nuf said, thank you.
The Menu

If you missed the meal on offer last week, you really missed out on a delicious serving. This week Regina is providing the 6th edition of the club takeaway service. The following is a copy of the email from Tim Davis.

Good morning everyone,

This week the pick-up days are Friday and Saturday.

The menu for this week is a Mother's Day theme:

2 course Meal ($25 per person)
Main
Glazed Ham with Colcannon, Pea Fricassée and Parsley Sauce

Dessert
Apple and Pear Crumble served with Thickened Cream

Soup  ($10 per person)
Roasted Tomato and Red Pepper

We are also offering our entire wine list for takeaway at a 10% discount. When collecting your food have a look at the blackboard behind the bar for even more wine specials.

Payment to be made at the time of collection, only by EFTPOS (tap only) or BGC Member number.   Cash payments cannot be accepted.

Wednesday 29th April. With 86 players in the field for the competition, the trigger was pulled to provide for 3 'runners-up' prizes for the first time since it's introduction. For those unaware of the change, as a result of the much larger fields on either a Wednesday (in excess of 70) or a Saturday (in excess of 90) a prize (equal to the normal runners-up prize) will be paid to the best score in each division in addition to the normal winners prize. Alan Lindsay (23), with 4 birdies, scored 45 points to win the event from Warwick Kiernan (34) with 43 for 'C' grade, Paul Barnes (16) with 39 for 'B' grade and Paul Pettiford (12) with 35 points for 'A' grade. The balls were won down to 35 points on count back.

Picture
Friday 1st May. The "Nugget". Seems that the Nugget aficionado's are a very hardy bunch, as the weather on the day was fairly poor. The field of 25 (18 male, 7 female) was a good indication that this competition is becoming a very popular event. Russell Bourne (24) scored 18 points to beat Paul Pettiford on a count back. Balls were won down to 17 points on count back.

Saturday 2nd May. A wildly windy and frigid day welcomed the 84 players who ventured out to contest the May Monthly Medal. James Burkitt (15) with a net 67 won the 'A' grade medal from David Spies (9) by a count back. Simon Taufel (17) won the 'B' grade medal with a net 66 (best net score of the day) from Leslie Brooker (17) with a net 71. David Farthing (29) scored a net 72 to win the 'C' grade medal on a count back from Nick Winstone (27). The scratch winner on the day was David Spies with 76. Balls were won down to net 75 on count back.

Sunday 3rd May. A much better day than the previous one, but still windy and very cold. 29 players presented to play the Blue course, with Dougal Ethel (22) posting 42 points to win from Josh Whitfield (25) with 36 points. Balls were won down to 34 points on count back.

Monday 4th May. Another new event at BGC. The "Monday Madness" event has been introduced for the month of May, but may be extended if numbers warrant. The event is played on the White course. Winning the inaugural Monday Madness was Bryan Frith (28) with a score of 39 points from Bob Bearup (17) with 37 points on a four-way count back. Balls were won down to 37 on count back.
