Christmas Cheer, Parent/Offspring, Chairs, Water Lillys

16/12/2015

Christmas Cheer 2015

On Sunday, a cheerful lot of 42 golfers headed off with a shotgun start at 9.00am to celebrate this year’s Christmas Cheer with a 4 Person Irish Stableford.  The weather was most kind reaching about 21 degrees with minimal wind. Although, drying out in the rough, the course is still in great condition and the competition was fierce. Winners were our President Kevin Burke, Wendy Burke, Warren Ryan and Maggie McKenzie with 113 points on a count back from Carole and Alan Turpie and Rosemary and Terry Downing. What a close finish to win on a count back. Other winners on the day were presented with prizes befitting their success, results sheet attached. Kevin Burke also won the mammoth Pro Pin with a great shot befitting the $15.00 he was awarded. Nominal consolation prizes were handed out to each table for the rest of the “also ran’s” of which there were many. Kevin Kenny cooked the BBQ and Stuart in the Pro Shop administered the paper work. A good day had by all and we look forward to a larger representation next year. Don’t  forget free Christmas drinks at the club this Friday at 5.00pm until 6.30pm.
Parent offspring

This year’s Parent / Offspring competition was held on Saturday 5th December with the winners, Jenny Grant and her Son Andrew.  Jenny hasn’t seen a lot of golf lately, looking after Don, who hasn’t been well and to win with Andrew, was just the lift she needed. Well done and congratulations. Our best wishes for a speedy recovery and welcome back to golf and the club house, also go to Don.

Don’t the 2nd and 13th pond’s look terrific since Dennis Cooper added the Water Lilly’s. They are flourishing and bursting into flower. Maybe in the future we can look into beautifying these ponds and creek further

New chairs  for the function room and then the dining room.
Blandina Meere has been raising funds to replace the chairs and tables in the function room. The Bowral Bridge Club has been generous with a substantial donation. Several members have also pledged funds.. The existing furniture is past its use by date and we want to lift the appearance of the interior of the clubhouse. The board approved her application to ask for member donations, which has resulted in reaching the stage of making a decision of which chairs to purchase. Blandina has placed an example of the chairs and coverings in the club for comment, prior to making the final decision. Should you wish pledge funds or make comment. Blandina would welcome your response. Her number is 4861 4048

Governors Legacy Golf Trophy, Champion of Champions, Where is the rain ?

On a scorching Friday on 20th November, Paul Pettiford, John Mulholland and David McGinnes, represented Bowral Golf Club at the Governors Legacy Golf Trophy event at Royal Sydney Golf course. Although they did not win on the day, they were competitive and had a great time. It was a shotgun start at 8.00am with lunch to follow. In order to make the early start they left Bowral at about 5.00am and stayed overnight. I have been assured that after the heat of the day, lunch, a couple of beers and dinner, they were all in bed by 9.30pm. They then made it back to Bowral to play in our legacy day on the Saturday. Royal Sydney have stringent dress codes for access to the club house after golf and I have been reliably informed that our representatives were the best dressed at the event. Thank you gentlemen for making the effort. pc

Champion of Champions, completion of our Club Championships, we have registered our Champions in “A” Grade Alex Mulholland, “B” Grade Alec Dietsch and “C” Grade Warren Ryan, to represent our club in the Champions of Champions Illawarra Golf event to be played at Highlands Golf Club on 20/12/15. We wish them all the best of luck. Any supporters from the club, would be most welcome.

Where’s the rain ? Damian rang me this morning to advise that although our bore is pumping continuously 24 hours a day, the dam is now nearly empty and he can’t keep the water up to the course to preserve it in the immaculate condition that we have grown to expect. Accordingly, priority will be given to greens, new fairways and those fairways that suffer most. All members would know, that Damian and his staff are dedicated employees and take setbacks like this personally. We are in one of the driest counties on earth and occasionally this will happen. Roots of grasses actually die at temperatures over 45 degrees. Fortunately we should not get to that, so any part of the course that does go off, will recover later with rain. Please be patient and hope that rain is not far away. In the meantime take advantage of the extra run.

Legacy 2015
The club  held a charity day for Legacy on Saturday 21/11/15 in perfect golfing weather. We had a good roll up for golf and with some very early starters through to 1.45pm. Geoffrey Hammond and his merry “Mash” crew manned the tent on the 5th and provided refreshments to all. The sausage rolls were particularly good, served with all manner of condiments together with wine, beer or spirits, a novelty on our course. Although it was a 5 hour round, nobody complained as it was in aide of a great cause and played in great spirit. Many were not aware of the extent of the prizes up for grabs, however, they did include, apart from trophies, Pearl necklace and earrings, paintings, books and much more arranged by David Farthing and donated by generous persons unknown. Our many thanks go to those supporters. At the conclusion of the golf, with scores recorded and card handed in, many of us made a dash for home to be back within ½ an hour for drinks prior to dinner. The chef served up an alternate Pork or Barramundi meal which was up to his usual excellent standard.  Rear Admirable Peter Sinclair, former Governor of NSW, gave us the speech of the night, which included in part, the history of the Throsby name, well known in this area. The story has its darker stages when cannibalism was practiced in NZ and 62 English immigrants met that fate. A 3 year old girl, who had been spared by the chief, later fled to Australia and was the start of the Throsby dynasty. Peter is a very interesting and fluent speaker and we were entertained by his delivery. We were also joined by Major General Phillip Michael Jeffery, former Governor General of Australia. All this attention was focused on raising money for Legacy.  A very worthwhile cause in which several of our members are fully involved. David Farthing thanked all attendees for their support and presented the trophies, drew the raffles and finalised the silent auction.  The Legacy Trophy was won on the day by Paul Pettiford and David McGinnes. Some maybe unaware that in the highlands area, 290 women and children are gratefully supported by Legacy and they would find it most difficult without that support. It is in all our interest to get behind this day, which is our “charity of choice” for our club. I have not heard the final tally for funds raised however I would assume it would be many thousands of dollars. Well done to all those involved.
Thank you. pc
