DOUG STALLEY - CLUB HISTORIAN / COURSE SAFETY

21/3/2019

DOUGLAS  STALLEY IS HANGING UP HIS CLUBS
PictureDoug Stalley
Douglas John Stalley a member since 1988, first elected to the board in 1992 and vice president in 1994 and 1995 then succeeded Don Lawson as president in 1996.
A former academic and economist, he had retired to a small farm in the district and was active on the Match and Greens committee. (Bowral Golf Club 1901 -2001 - Douglas Stalley)
In 2000 Doug undertook to write a history of the Bowral Golf Club for its centenary year, which is available to members on line under "club history".
Doug is now in his ninety's and finds a round of golf physically taxing so has decided to retire from golf and concentrate on his Friday morning bridge sessions. He was to play in last Wednesday's four man Ambrose but due to the course being closed to carts he couldn't participate.
Doug has been a very proficient golfer in his time and still plays of a 29 handicap. To send him off in style we have slotted in another four man Ambrose on Wednesday April 3rd in place of the listed Stableford event. I would hope that as many members who can, will play in the Ambrose and be there at the presentation for this wonderful members retirement round.

COURSE SAFETY

A  Stop sign has been attached to the tree above the existing warning sign at the beginning of the concrete path that crosses the 17th fairway between the 4th green and the three way tee. Members are urged for their own safety to heed these warnings and where possible to alert visitors to the potential danger.
I would also ask those golfers who cross the 17th fairway directly after putting out on the 4th green to use the path, reducing any risk and, save undue wear on the fairway,  it really is not a short cut.

WHITE HORSE CUP
The competition is drawing to a close with both our teams performing well however may just miss out featuring in the final series. I’ll let the respective captains of our two teams tell the story;

Hi Team 2 et al,

A tough day and at 4/2 against, a loss for the team. The score does not
truly show how close some of the games were.
Of the 3 matches we have played we have 2 draws and 1 loss which has put
us out of contention for the major prize and we now play our final game
to finish a little higher in the rankings.
Next week we play Links Sussex Inlet 2 at Shoalhaven Heads Golf Course,
with a start time of 7am - an early start for us all.
Weather today was hot and very windy and at a time of over 4 hours for
the game, it was pretty hard.

A valiant effort but not the outcome we planned for, we went down 4/2 against Shoalhaven Heads at Links Shell Cove. No excuses but we did have to give as a team 34 shots, a bridge too far. It was a great day but the team was exhausted, “golfed out” was one comment.

We are still 3rd on the table with a very slim chance of getting on top, need to “do a Bradbury”.

Regards,

Dave

PATRONS TROPHY - FOURSOMES CHAMPIONSHIP

The above trophy events have been rescheduled to be played on May 11th.
Allowing more time to advertise the events to attract a greater participation in these important trophies. As in previous years the top eight gross scores will qualify for the Foursomes Championship match play. The following dates have been allocated for the play offs;
Quarter Finals - by 9th June
Semi finals      - by 30th June
FINAL             - on 14th July
Please note there will be no single event played in conjunction with the Patrons Trophy.
Foursomes events are enjoyed by many.  We encourage all players to form a team for the Patrons Trophy so you may be one of the eight qualifiers to contest the Club Foursomes Championship.

COURSE MATTERS - GREENS CARE

Our greens are fragile and require a lot of TLC.
When a marker for nearest the pin has to be moved please use a ball marker to indicate its position. Do not scratch the mark with the spike of the card holder as shown in the photograph.

While on the subject of greens please always leave them in better condition than you found them by repairing any pitch marks you can see. Improvements allowed on putting green are covered by Rule 13.1c.

R & A's ONLINE RULES ACADEMY

I am pleased to announce that the R&A’s online Level 1 Rules Academy is now available.

The online Rules Academy is an excellent tool for learning the basics and testing your understanding of the Rules - ideal as the first step in the Rules education process. It covers the most commonly occurring Rules situations, culminating in the official R&A Level 1 exam.

As it is available online you can come and go as you see fit and the module will start up again where you left off.

I would strongly encourage all Club Captains & Match Committee members to complete the R&A’s online Level 1 rules training at your earliest convenience.

Clubs are also encouraged to let their members know about the R&A’s online Level 1 Rules Academy and encourage them to complete the program also.
