Bowral 1 had their first win against a strong Wollongong team at St. Georges Basin on Sunday 3 ½ to 2 ½ .
We got off to a good start at the BGC Car Park at 6.15am as Ashley was on time.
Hit off was about 8.30am with Robert Eriksson leading us out.

Results were :
Alex Mulholland 6 / 5. Had an exceptional game with a mixture of eagles, birdies and pars.
Sam Mulholland square : A hard fought 18 for 5 hours in hot humid conditions. Well done
Ashley Southon : Great effort going down 2 / 1. Little finger was out of sort on the day.
Paul Carroll : 3/1 up. Drove straight all day and wore opponent down.
David McGinnes : 2 up. Always in control but put opponent away on the last.
Robert Eriksson : Met the burglar on the day but held his head high for a 2/1 loss.

Next week we play St.Georges Basin at Kiama for an 8.00am start. Team is Alex Mulholland, Ashley Southon, David McGinnes, Don Barker, Peter Girven and Robert Eriksson.

Well done boys, we just need to win our next two matches and for somebody to knock over Jamberoo to reach the finals. Paul Carroll

Bowral Team 2
defeated Nowra at
Highlands today 4/2.
Paul Pettiford won 6/5
Jim Phillips won 1 up
David Boyd won 2 up
Bob Young won 2/1
David Stanley lost 5/3
Terry Downing lost 4/3

Next we are at home at Bowral to Shoalhaven Heads when our team will be David Burgess, Pascal Timores, Alan Turpie, Bruce Frankland, David Mathers and Terry Downing.
We are equal top in our division with Vincentia and Highlands (I think we may be in front on matches won), so if we can win next week we will go to Vincentia for the last round on 15 March with a chance of making the finals.
Well done fellows.

David Boyd

Local rules. Just a bit more on the deletion of the local rule regarding the signs on the 14th hole regarding the signs. Local rules must conform to the criteria for local rules viz a viz this extract from the Golf Australia website concerning local rules:-
Committees may only provide local rules in accordance with either Appendix I, Part A of the Rules of Golf as approved by R&A Rules Limited, or with this document. Approval must be obtained should any additional Local Rule be desired – please contact your state association.

Golf NSW also confirmed that the local rule was not appropriate. The sign as it stands was introduced some years ago to give some guidance to play sequence on the 14th and 15th hole. Players are requested to stay behind the fence but they are not required by a local rule. Therefore there is no penalty for golfers who proceed up the 14th fairway while the golfers on the 15th tee are teeing off.

Playing golf involves inherent risks, I suppose like most activities. One of the obvious risks is being struck by a ball. In the rule book it says

Safety Players should ensure that no one is standing close by or in a position to be hit by the club, the ball or any stones, pebbles, twigs or the like when they make a stroke or practice swing. Players should not play until the players in front are out of range. Players should always alert greenstaff nearby or ahead when they are about to make a stroke that might endanger them. If a player plays a ball in a direction where there is a danger of hitting someone, he should immediately shout a warning. The traditional word of warning in such situations is “fore”.
PictureA new sign will be placed on the way from the 4th green to the triple tee. A quotation is being obtained
Following the request to review the 14th/15th hole situation I had another look around at risks on our golf course and advisories from different golf associations. From this came the new interim policy of not calling up on par 3s. It is a recommendation of Golf NSW whereas Golf Australia is less definite but suggests that club committees consider it. Two holes spring to mind where calling up may come into play - the 14th, but more especially the 4th. In the afternoon golfers on the greens would both be looking to the western sky and for some of us our eyes have difficulty in picking up a golf ball travelling over 140km/hr coming towards us out of the sun, therefore there is probably a greater risk at Bowral of being struck by an incoming ball. The advisory from Golf NSW seems very sensible.

There is another side to this, of course, in that our, as in our club, potential liability for accidents on the golf course. There is a well cited case of a golf course in Scotland that was found 30% liable in a 400,000 UK pound settlement where the golf course should  have erected a warning sign. We will be erecting a warning sign on the way from the 4th to the 5th tee, so that golfers are aware of the potential of being struck by errant balls played from the 17th tee.

As I said before, playing golf, like all other activities, involves inherent risks. One of these risks is being struck by a ball. The onus is on the player hitting the ball, making sure the way is clear. Players on the course should be aware of the potential risks on the course, so that they minimise the chance of an accident.

Damage to the course.
The main culprits are Correllas, Ibis and foxes. Weather damage is just 'one of those things'  with the most obvious , the last few months water damage from incessant rain that leaves waster lying on the course that then kills the grass in spots. The foxes are after the white lave as are the Ibis. The corralls are looking for lava, for roots and bulb-like corms, in plants such as onion weed.

On our side
Just a reminder - practice chipping on any tee is not permitted. . Many members chip from the practice area by the 1st to the practice green - that is probably the best place.

Update to the course improvement project.
The first part of the project was the construction of the bridge on the 1st. The structure of the bridge has been completed and we are now waiting for the concrete to develop its design strength. The bridge will have a stone cladding and this work will start early next month. The new bridge will be open for traffic in the week beginning the 9th of March and the old bridge removed as soon as possible after.

The next stage of the project will be the concrete paths around the 5th tee and we are (endeavouring) to obtain final quotes - our  estimate is within the budget for the complete project. Competing for contractors and tradesmen's attention amid other requests for their time, such as other quotations, obligations undertaken, weather delays and the like is always a challenge, but we are trying our best.  Jobs always take longer than wished and  this project is no exception
