Last Saturday night 29th February, over 80 members of the club donned their finery to celebrate the anniversary of the club's founding back in 1901. One of the highlights of the evening was a speech by Club President Robin Humphreys, who summarised the activities of the club over the past 12 months and provided the members present with an outline of some of the very serious issues confronting the club as we proceed into the next decade. The club has enjoyed a very good year both financially (we will finish the year with a small profit) and in golfing activities.
The evening also served to reward those players who had won a trophy event during 2019, but especially for the winners of the Club Championship events to be formally recognised for their excellence. Rob Humphreys was pleased to present the following awards :
- Men's Club Champion - John Mulholland
- Women's Club Champion - Anne Geddes
- Men's 'B' Grade Club Champion - Tony Rourke
- Women's Div 2 Champion - Ellen Neale
- Men's 'C' Grade Club Champion - Ken Dobie
- Women's Div 3 Champion - Rosemary Downing
- Men's Foursomes Club Champions - Craig Houden & Phil Jeffrey
- Women's Foursomes Club Champions - Pam Barker & Carol Warner
- Women's Div 2 Foursomes Champions - Wendy Bourke & Robyn McGinness
- Women's Div 3 Foursomes Champions - Noela McMurray & Anne Vitou
- Mixed Foursomes Club Champions - Michelle Di Natale & Sam Mulholland
Congratulations to our champions, and to all those who managed to secure a trophy during the year. It is not an easy thing to achieve, and full credit to those who achieved it.
Thanks also to Tim, Regina and the team for providing yet another fabulous evening.
With the fine weather we have experienced over the past week, the course is well on its way to recovery. The 'Preferred Lies' have been removed entirely, all the bunkers are in play and the mounding around the 6th green will no longer be 'GUR' from the completion of the greens' renovations this week. The birds are an ongoing issue unfortunately, and we are always trying to find ways of deterring them from the course. A huge thank you to those players who make a point of repairing divots and pitch marks.
- Greens' Renovations commence after the final morning group on Wednesday morning (4th March) and will be complete by the following day. There will be a short morning-only competition on the Wednesday.
- Saturday 7th March, a Green-Keeper's Revenge, 3 person Ambrose event.
- Sunday 15th March is the last day to complete the 2nd round of the Arthur Brassey knockout.
- Thursday 19th March is the annual Whale's Tooth competition, held this year at the Australian Golf Club. Ian McKenzie is the organiser of this prestigious event and has plans well in hand.
- Sunday 22nd March is the final day for the Semi Finals of the Club Championships in Foursomes. The final is the following Sunday 29th.
- Club General Meeting Thursday 26th March commencing at 6pm.
Wednesday 26th February. A field of 61 players watched on as Robin Humphreys (27) posted 41 points to win the day from Alec Dietsch (13) with 40 points on count back. The Eagle is nesting with 15 balls at present!! The NTP 11th went to John Mulholland and the pro pin to Peter Leon. We welcomed a visitor from Manly GC to the competition.
Saturday 29th February. A busy day for the club. The President's Trophy and the March Monthly Medal. With a fine score of net 66 Noel Davis (28) won the trophy event with John Mulholland (9) runner-up with a net 67. A good day for John Mulholland, who also won the 'A' grade medal and the best scratch score of the day with 76 on a count back. The 'B' grade medal was won by Alan Turpie (20) with a net 68 from Robert Bearup (17) net 69 on count back. The 'C' grade medal went to Noel Davis with his 66 from Ian McKenzie (24) net 69. The Eagle has 3 balls under her wing waiting for next weekend, while Alec Dietsch won the NTP 11th and David Stanley the pro pin. 78 players in the field made for an excellent competition held in some of the best golfing weather for some time.
White Horse Cup. Unfortunately, and despite valiant attempts to reverse our history in this event, the BGC team went down to a strong Shoalhaven Heads team with a score of 5-2. Again most of their matches were close, but as was the case the previous week our guys were pipped at the post. Many thanks to Dave Burgess for running and Captaining the side, and to Don Barker for his assistance and Kevin Kenny for the team training. Bring on 2021.
Last week I posed a question about the allowable methods of marking a ball on the green (go and read it now). The requirement is that the marker be 'immediately adjacent the ball', and hence the marker may be positioned anywhere around the ball, providing the ball is replaced in the exact spot from where it is lifted.
In the putt-off which followed the question at the Saturday presentation, Ian McKenzie backed up from his win last week to repeat the result. Daniel Weekes was heard to say "But I've never lost a putt-off???"
This week's question is about bunkers.
A player's ball is in a bunker and it is Un-playable. How many options are available to the player to take relief?
Last week there were quite a number of correct guesses to the identity of the mystery member. Brian Lamb was the answer, and he was first identified by Alec Dietsch on Monday evening, so if you think you might know the answer, I'd suggest you respond quickly!! send your response to [email protected]
The clue to the new identity.
"My name appears on at least one of the honour boards along the eastern wall of the member's lounge". Who am I?
Note: the photo is a logo only.
After the honeymoon, the new wife tells her husband, "I think it's time for you to stop playing golf. In fact, I think you might as well sell all of your clubs."
The husband replies, "You're starting to sound like my ex-wife."
His wife says, "I thought you said you've never been married before?"
The husband replies, "I haven't".
Now Go Out and Enjoy a Game of Golf!!!
