Last week we had the Annual White Horse Cup Dinner to lament over the wins and losses that were incurred in the competition at the beginning of the year. As in the previous 52 odd years of the history of this competition, there has always been a reason that the finals just slipped away. This year was no different. It was the wet weather on the last day of normal play in March, which coincidentally was to be at our home course and would have guaranteed us a win. Unfortunately, although our course was open, the rest of the Illawarra was flooded and all games in the competition were abandoned. As we could not contest this last game, both Bowral 1 and Bowral 11 failed to make the finals. Did this dampen the spirit of the dinner. Certainly not. Convener extraordinaire, Don Barker, went to great lengths to highlight the players with the least losses as our worthy combatants for the year. This year new comers Tony Rourke and Norris Dudgeon were the standouts with net wins. Tony proved to be the overall winner of the coveted Golden David and was pleased to accept the statue for safe keeping for the next 12 months. He wasn't sure if Margaret would share the same enthusiasm. Team Captains David Boyd and David Burgess offered their praise for members of the teams and the dedication they show by getting up early each Sunday morning in February to travel to the far reaches of the Illawarra and compete against the best the area can offer. Unfortunately David Boyd, for personal reasons, has stepped down as Team Captain, however Alec Dietsch had no hesitation in putting up his hand for this prestigious roll. The law of averages say that one day, which may be next year, we will be worthy winners of this ever elusive sought after trophy. On behalf of the club and myself, I would like to offer my personal congratulations and appreciation to both team Captains and to all the members of this elite group for their dedication and perseverance. The meal provided by Regina was outstanding as was the service provided by Tim and the staff. A great night full of fun and comradeship. Thank you to all. |
