Captain's Trophy - Volunteers - What's a 'Stimp meter'

3/8/2015

Letter from Frank Eggert - Captain's Trophy Winner 2015

Thank you, Captain for both the congratulations and the gift.

I agree, it was an extremely tough day and at 6 over with a solitary par as I approached the eighth, I was hoping that no-one else was carving up the course. Any thoughts of challenging for the Captains Trophy were dashed when I took a ten on the eighth…one bad shot to get under and three dumb shots to get out from under a spikey tree about fifty metres from the tee!

As I walked up to the ninth tee, Ray Smee (bless him) urged me to “bounce back” and not give on my round. Whether it was Ray’s support or the freedom of mind and body that comes from having hopelessly stuffed up your round, I don’t know but I proceeded to par the next nine holes and take a “good” bogey on the eighteenth for an outward 46 and an inward 35…an eleven stroke swing. As Ian Mckenzie commented “consistency is the name of the game”.

As they also say “It ain’t over till over!”.

Thanks again, Frank.

Dads Army
Call  for Volunteers

Picture
Dad's Army is a group of members who generously offer their services each Thursday in the interest of the club and our members. As the pictures below testify, our intrepid volunteers are doing a wonderful job clearing out the drain on the left side of the 1st hole. Anybody with a draw (hook when you don't mean it) will more than appreciate their efforts. If you can lend a hand on a Thursday for a couple of hours from 9.00am, please contact Peter Hannaford or Hamish Macfarlan.

On John Mulholland’s recent trip to the UK he came across a plaque related to the story of the origin of the Stableford system of scoring. Apparently a Dr. Frank Barney Gorton Stableford from Glamorganshire Golf Club Penarth Wales in 1898, had an 11 on a par 3 and decided there had to be a better way of scoring. He invented the Stableford system of scoring to deter golfers from giving up on their round after just one or two bad holes. The system was believed to be first used in competition at Wallasey Golf Club Wallasey England in 1932. I trust you will all join me in offering my heartfelt thanks for his ingenuity.

The Stimp Meter.
Golf greens vary in speed. Course Supervisors use the Stimp meter to measure the speed of the green so that they may be set up to the condition required by the tournament director.
The distance the ball rolls on the green once it has left the track is the “Stimp” reading. For example, if the ball rolls an average of 11.2 feet then the stimp reading would be 11.2. On the recent British Open TV coverage you may have heard that the greens have been cut to 4mm and the stimp reading was 10.3.

Pelican 2 - Carp 0

Reported during July. Two of the carp inhabiting the dams on the 15th and 13th were caught by our recent temporary resident pelican.
