The Pine tree next to the ladies 14th tree gave in to the prevailing wind late last Tuesday. The ground staff did a great job of cleaning up the branches and burning the stump, however it now leaves a void in the area between the two 14th tees. What's the plan ? Whilst we want to keep the cost as minimal as possible, if you have some ideas, put them down on a piece of paper with a sketch and submit them to myself or a Match & Greens committee person for consideration. All submissions will be considered however, may not be adopted.
Last Saturday I had the pleasure of playing with Pip Smith and Doug Stalley, both aging very gracefully in their twilight years. Whilst they were in a cart on the day, Pip tells me he previously carried his bag up to a few years ago, however, the weight eventually wore him down. He has been adding his name to the 9.37 am time slot each Saturday for in excess of the past 30 years and looks forward to members joining him in a round of golf. Both are true Gentlemen and great members, who deserve our respect and understanding. You will be rewarded by their company. On the first tee on Saturday afternoon, in tough wet conditions, David Burgess commenced his usual Saturday afternoon round of golf, not knowing that this would be a round, never to be forgotten. From the 4th tee he selected his driver, as he knew, that reaching the green in such heavy conditions would take a huge effort. With a fabulous drive, straight at the pin he thought he would be close. As he walked up to the green he could not see his ball and thought it may have gone through. In hope, he looked into the hole and guess what, a great hole in one. This is the first male member Hole in One on the 4th, since 1995. Patron Brian Lamb presented the "Hole in One" club tie to David, who then purchased a bottle of Single Malt to help celebrate the success with other club members. Congratulations David, we hope it's not the last. From time to time, it is inevitable, the course will be closed and competition cancelled, due to wet weather. When it happens on a Wednesday or Saturday, we will automatically have a "Captains / Presidents long table lunch at the club. We invite all those members who had their names down to play on the day, to join the Captain and / or the President for lunch followed by an event. What's the event you ask. It could be an old or new film of interest, a lecture, a putting competition or anything else which may amuse, we are open to suggestion. The point is, the club does not close when it rains and we would like your attendance as an alternative to the golf. I will see you on the next wet day.
